The Austrian bass, Kurt Link, is a winner of the Metropolitan Opera, Liederkranz, Opera Index and Sullivan competitions, and featured by Opera News as a singer to “keep your eye on”.
Kurt Link has earned a reputation as one of America’s finest basses, both in opera and oratorio. He consistently earns critical acclaim for a repertoire that embraces major operatic roles from Purcell to Henze and W.A. Mozart to Wagner. Signature roles include Baron Ochs, Daland, Figaro, Leporello, Osmin, Sarastro, Ramfis, Colline, Mephistophelesand other major bass roles with companies such as the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, La Monnaie, Santa Fe Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Washington Opera, Dublin Grand Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Florida Grand Opera, Atlanta Opera, New Israeli Opera, the opera companies of Portland, Minnesota, Michigan, St. Louis, Utah, Edmonton and the opera festivals of Chautauqua, Wexford (Ireland), Hong Kong, Wolf Trap, Glimmerglass and Spoleto (USA and Italy).
Most recent engagements from the past few seasons include Timur in Turandot with Opera Birmingham, Commendatore in Don Giovanni with the Arizona Opera, Lorenzo in I Capuletti et I Montecchi and Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with the Florentine Opera, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Utah Symphony Orchestra & Opera, Frère Laurent in Roméo et Juliette with the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Dr. Grenvil in La Traviata with El Paso Opera, and a return to the Metropolitan Opera for productions of War and Peace, The Gambler and Macbeth. In concert, most recent engagements from the past few seasons include Bass soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, L.v. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, and W.A. Mozart’s Mass in c minor with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. In the 2009-2010 season, engagements include Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with the Arizona Opera, and a return to the Metropolitan Opera for House of the Dead and The Nose.

Mozart's Die Zauberflöte,Daland in Der Fliegende Holländer, Rocco in Fidelio with Atlanta Opera; Old Hebrew in Samson et Dalila and Osmin in W.A. Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail with Opera Pacific; Osmin in Camille Saint-Saëns' Die Entführung aus dem Serail with Portland Opera; a return to Florida Grand Opera as Le Comte des Grieux in Manon and Varlaam in Boris Godunov; Baron Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier at La Monnaie (Brussels); and Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Minnesota Opera.
Widely acclaimed in symphonic works, Mr. Link often performs The Creation, St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), Missa Solemnis, the Requiem Masses of Verdi, W.A. Mozart and Gabriel Fauré, J.S. Bach’s Mass in B minor (BWV 232), L.v. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and many other works with the orchestras of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo, Baltimore, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Florida, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Charleston, Phoenix, Jacksonville, Aspen, San Antonio, Milwaukee, as well as National Cathedral in Washington. He has appeared as soloist with Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Charles Dutoit, Margaret Hillis, Erich Leinsdorf, Riccardo Muti, Eugene Ormandy, Leonard Slatkin, Sir Georg Solti, Edo de Waart, and David Zinman.
Most recent concert engagements include Verdi’s Requiem at the National Cathedral in Washington, L.v. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony and with the Japan Symphony, performances of W.A. Mozart’s Requiem in Vienna, Munich, Budapest and Prague with the Dallas Symphony Chorus, and the bass soloist in Dvorak’s Stabat Mater with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Charles Dutoit conducting.
Kurt Link is heard on the GRAMMY Award winning London Records recording of Arnold Schoenberg’s Moses and Aaron with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Georg Solti.
As a voice professor, Kurt Link has taught at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, DePaul University, North Park University, and at Chicago College of Performing Arts. He has also served as Artist-In-Residence at Lawrence University. |
