Leon van Liere (Tenor)

Born: June 10, ___ - The Hague, the Netherlands

The Dutch tenor, Leon van Liere, studied Architecture at the Technische Universiteit Delft (September 1996-September 2006). He studied Classical Singing with Frans Huijts at the Codarts - Rotterdams Conservatorium (Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Singing: 2004-2009; Master of Music degree in Classical Singing: 2009-2012), after which he continued his education with Raymond Modesti and Brian Masuda. He is currently being coached by Marion van den Akker and Rudolf Piernay. He has taken further lessons and master-classes with Roberta Alexander, Carolyn Watkinson, Marcel Reijans, Paul Triepels, Margreet Honig, Alexander Oliver and Dennis O'Neill, among others.

As an oratorio singer, Leon van Liere has performed solos in J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 and Johannes-Passion BWV 245, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Haydn's Die Schöpfung and Die Jahreszeiten, W.A. Mozart's Requiem and various masses, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah and Paulus, Verdi's Requiem, Dvorak's Stabat Mater and Requiem, and Sergei Rachmaninov's The Bells.

During his studies, Leon van Liere appeared in productions of the Dutch National Opera Academy, as Il Podestà in W.A. Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera and as the Son in Thierry Tidrow's Less Truth, More Telling. He also sang roles such as Ismaele in G. Verdi's Nabucco, Rinuccio in G. Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Rodolfo in G. Puccini's La Bohème and Alfredo in G. Verdi's La Traviata. During the Peter de Grotefestival in Groningen and the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam he performed the roles of Willem Mons and Nicolaas Witsen in Monique Krüs's The Tsar, his wife, her lover and his head and again during the Amsterdam's Grachtenfestival Maximiliaan and Cacambo in a short, Dutch-language version of Leonard Bernstein's Candide, a revival of a production of the Nationale Reisopera's Resident Artists Programme. In 2017 he played the role of Captain in G. Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, conducted by James Gaffigan in the NTR Zaterdagmatinee. In 2018 he was seen as Don José in an adaptation of Georges Bizet's Carmen during the Bredewegfestival and he returned to the NTR Zaterdagmatinee in Delius' A Village Romeo and Juliet conducted by Sir Mark Elder. In 2019 he sang a number of roles in Schreker's Die Gezeichneten, conducted by Markus Stenz. In 2021 he played the role of Bob Boles in Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes, performed on the Wadden Sea near Paesens-Moddergat in Friesland. He is a member of Groot Omroepkoor (AKA Netherlands Radio Choir). He currently lives Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
