Carol Lieberman (Violin)

Born: August 18, 1943 - Bronx, New York, USA

The American violinist and educator, Carol Lieberman, obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from City Colege of New York (1965), her Master of Music degree from Yale University (1967) and her DMA degree from Yale University (1974). She studied violin with Rapahel Bronstein and Broadus Erle.

Carol Lieberman made her debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1975. Recognised as one of America’s leading exponents of Baroque violin performance for the past 50 years, she is equally acclaimed for her command of the violin repertoire from the 19th to the 21st centuries. Carol Lieberman's concert tours have taken her throughout Europe, North and South America, and the Middle East, and include appearances as guest soloist with festivals such as Original Abu-Gosh Music Festival of Israel (1968), Connecticut Early Music Festival (from 1985), Grand Teton, Mostly Mozart, Radovljica of Slovenija, and Dni Bachowski of Poland. Her concerto appearances have included the violin concertos of Sibelius, Johannes Brahms, L.v. Beethoven, W.A. Mozart, Haydn, Antonio Vivaldi and J.S. Bach, with orchestras such as the Boston Pops Orchestra, CBC Festival Orchestra, Orchestra of the Associazione Musicale Romana, Belgrade Chamber Orchestra, and the Handel and Haydn Society. She also served as concertmistress for the Handel and Haydn Society, Masterworks Chorale (from 1980) and Associazione Musicale Romana. She was also a member of Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Broadcasts for WGBH, radti-TV and WBUR radio, Boston, including 6 part simulcast series for for Maine Public Television; Radio and television programmes for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Broadcasts for Radio National de Espagna, Madrid (1985).

The scope of Carol Lieberman's versatility can be seen by her performances of the complete Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord of J.S. Bach in Lisbon, Madrid, Rome, Paris, and cities throughout the USA, and her numerous concerts of works by romantic and contemporary composers. Her recordings not only include the complete J.S. Bach violin sonatas, which earned critical acclaim when they first appeared in 1978, but also sonatas by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Christian Bach and Simon LeDuc; Erno Dohnanyi’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, Serenade for String Trio, and second Quintet for Piano and Strings; Schubert’s Three Sonatinas for Violin and Fortepiano; the complete 1681 Sonate a Violino Solo of H.I.F. von Biber; Elliott Carter's Riconoscenza; works for violin and harpsichord by Vittorio Rieti and Walter Piston; and Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time. A reviewer of her most recent album, The Art of Carol Lieberman, a 2-CD compilation from her recordings on both Baroque and modern violin, summarized these accomplishments: “the great American violinist Carol Lieberman…is a world-class artist with a bold, distinctive sound… she is a violinist’s violinist, a teacher, a concertmaster, and a champion of lesser-known works, both as a soloist and a chamber musician.”

The first violinist to receive the DMA degree from Yale University, Carol Lieberman served as chair of the department of violin at Baylor University and the University of Maine in Orono, and subsequently as Professor of Music at the College of the Holy Cross from 1985-2019, where she was Director of the Holy Cross Chamber Players; she also taught violin and Baroque violin in the Department of Historical Performance at the Boston University School of Music for more than twenty years (from 1979). She is currently Professor emerita at the College of the Holy Cross.

Carol Lieberman married the harpsichordist Mark Kroll on July 9, 1975. They have a son, Ethan Kroll, and two grandchildren.
