The American conductor, tenor and educator, Joe A.D. Lerangis. obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, Modern Foreign Languages (Chinese, French) from Kenyon College (2008-2012); his Certificate in Chinese Studies, International Relations and Affairs from Paul H. Nitze School for Advanced International Studies, Hopkins-Nanjing Center (2013-2014). He then spent several years in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where he completed a Fulbright fellowship (August 2012-June 2013) and founded and developed the first music department in a general education secondary school in Mongolia to offer youth choir, orchestra, and band programs (August 2014-June 2017). In 2017, they reached the final round of Mongolia’s nationally televised pop idol competition, winning the Judge’s Choice Award and an award from the Mongolian Ministry of Culture.
Joe Lerangis obtained his Master of Music degree in Conducting from Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester (2017-2019). At Eastman he was Co-President of Eastman ACDA Chapter; Graduate Teaching Assistant conducting Eastman Repertory Singers, University of Rochester/Eastman School of Music Women's Chorus, Eastman School of Music: Bach Cantata Series. He has studied choral conducting with William Weinert, Marguerite Brooks, Jeffrey Douma, and André J. Thomas, and orchestral conducting with Donald Schleicher, Mark Gibson, Brad Lubman, Larry Rachleff, and Carl St. Clair.
Joe Lerangis is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting at Yale University (since 2019; expected graduation: 2025). At Yale he is Teaching Assistant - Music History Before 1750, Music Theory II; Private Teacher - Conducting, Music Theory and Analysis, Voice; Teaching Artist - Music in Schools Initiative. While at Yale, he received both the Robert Shaw Prize in Conducting and the Friedmann Thesis Prize for outstanding work for their doctoral dissertation, “Hybridized Urtyn Duu and the Making of a Mongolian Choral Idiom in the Works of Byambasurengiin Sharav.”
Joe Lerangis has appeared as a conductor and tenor both internationally and across the USA. He has worked as Director of Music at Spiritus Christi church in Rochester, New York (November 2017-September 2019); Assistant Conductor of both the Yale Glee Club (September 2020-July 2022) and the Yale Camerata (September 2019-July 2022); Director of Choral Programs, Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Colgate University (August 2021-July 2022), where they re-established the choral program after its Covid dormancy. Since July 2022, he is Assistant Professor of Music, Director of Choral Activities at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
Joe Lerangis is a passionate artist, musician, and teacher specializing in both choral and instrumental music. He has experience developing music programs from the ground up, and building on prestigious legacies of artistry, working with choirs and ensembles of all ages and skill levels. He is a strong advocate for cross-cultural understanding, and have put his skills in multiple languages to use in various professional settings.
