Sun Min Lee (Choral Conductor)

Born: Korea

The Korean-born conductor, Sun Min Lee, earned her Bachelor of Church Music degree from the Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary in South Korea and her Master of Music degree in choral conducting with distinction from Westminster Choir College, where she studied with Joseph Flummerfelt. During her residency, she was a member of the renowned Westminster Choir and Westminster Symphonic Choir and performed under Claudio Abbado, Kurt Masur, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Sir Colin Davis and Joseph Flummerfelt. Prior to coming to the USA, she received an advanced diploma in Zoltán Kodály’s music pedagogy from the Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemét, Hungary, where she studied with Peter Erdei. She has done doctoral studies at the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with William Weinert and performed with the Eastman Philharmonic Orchestra and Eastman-Rochester Chorus.

In 2001-2003, Sun Min Lee was on the conducting faculty at Hobart and William Smith colleges in Geneva, New York, where she directed the College-Community Chorus. She is an assistant professor of choral conducting and the director of the Chapel Choir since 2004 at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. She conducted the Schola Cantorum and the Westminster Symphonic Choir, and teaches both undergraduate and graduate conducting courses at Westminster. In 2005 and 2006, she led the Chapel Choir on concert tours to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Under her direction, the Chapel Choir has performed extensive repertoire including Igor Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, Zoltán Kodály’s Pange Lingua, Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb and sacred works by J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel, Haydn, W.A. Mozart and L.v. Beethoven.

Sun Min Lee has collaborated with many renowned guest conductors, including Anton Armstrong, Stephen Paulus, Kathy Saltzman Romey, Dale Warland, Mark Laycock, Fernando Raucci, and Peter Bagley. One of her collaborations included preparing W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass for the performances at Avery Fisher Hall with Maestro Lorin Maazel and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006. She has also premiered new choral compositions by Philip Orr, Stephen Young, Joel Phillips, Peter Wright, and Matthew Rendulic.

Sun Min Lee is in constant demand as a guest conductor, clinician and lecturer. She has appeared as a conductor in a joint gala concert of West-Windsor High Schools, and the for the Bucks County Senior High School Festival, Monroe County High School Choral Festival, the Princeton Amateur Musical Society and the Rochester Oratorio Society, Long Island All County Festival and, most recently, the 2009 Tennessee All-State Women’s Chorale. In November, she was invited to be the conductor of the honors choir from the Baltimore County Public High Schools. As a choral clinician, she was invited to San Jose University, Kodaly Institute in Hungary, and South Korea as well as numerous visits to local churches and schools. As a church musician, she is currently a choir director at the Praise Presbyterian Church in Somerset, New Jersey and a member of the Korean Worship and Music Conference Committee.
