The French-born conductor, pianist and cellist, Martin Lebel, studied fugue, counterpoint, orchestration and conducting at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, wininng 1er prix
and 2ème prix (1988-1993). In 1998 he was awarded at the Dimitri Mitropoulos International Conducting Competition (Athens).
He was assistant to James Conlon with the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln (Germany) and at the Bastille Opera. In 2003 he became the first French director to be distinguished with the First Prize at the Prokofiev International Competition in Saint Petersburg.
Among the orchestras Martin Lebel has conducted are: the National Capitol Orchestra (Toulouse, 2003), Sverdlovsk Philharmonic (Russia, 2003), Dvorak Festival Orchestra, Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic, 2004, 2007), Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra (2004), St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra (2004, 2007), Settin Philharmonic (Poland, 2004, 2007), Pardubice Philharmonic (Czech Republic, 2005), Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Czech Republic), Skopje Philharmonic (Macedonia, 2005), Saint-Étienne Symphony (France, 2005) and Manizales Orchestra (Colombia, 2007). In Mexico he has conducted the Orquesta de Xalapa (since January 2020) and OFUNAM. He was Artistic Director of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Montevideo, Uruguay (2013-April 2015) and has been Artistic and Musical Director of the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra since 2009. Since 2020, he is Conductor of Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa (OSX) in Mexico.
In operatic material, Martin Lebel assisted maestro James Conlon in several productions of the Opera de la Bastille in Paris. He also conducted excerpts from Debussy's Pelléas and Mélisande, Menotti's La Medium, and W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Paris Theater. In Uruguay he directed Madama Butterfly, Falstaff, Manon Lescaut and Ariadna in Naxos, in the opera season of the Montevideo Philharmonic and the Solís Theater. |
