Gaële Le Roi (Soprano)

Born: France

Renowned for her dynamic stage presence, which delights public and critics alike, the soprano Gaële Le Roi has firmly established herself as a leading talent of the young generation of French singers.

Following her professional debut at the Opéra National de Lyon, Gaële Le Roi was remarked upon by Peter Sellars and asked to sing Yniold, Pelleas et Melisande à l'Opéra d'Amsterdam (Simon Rattle) and at the Los Angeles Music Center (Esa-Pekka Salonen). She then went on to sing this same rôle at the Teatro Della La Fenice, Venice in a production from Pier-Luigi Pizzi, as well as at the Opéra National de Paris in Bob Wilson's production. In 2002 she sang to great success her first Mélisande à l'Opéra de Massy in a production from Yannis Kokkos and since then as Jemmy in Rossini's Guillame Tell at Opéra National de Paris. In recent years, she has been regularly invited to De Nederlandse Opera (Jenufa, L'Incoronazione di Poppea), the Opéra National de Paris (Die Zauberflöte, L'Enfant et les Sortilèges), to the Opéra de Montpellier (L'Epouse injustement soupconnée, Jenufa, Hippolyte et Aricie, Viva la mamma de Donizetti), to Le Théâtre des Champs Elysées (Die Zauberflöte), the Salzburg Festival (Les Troyens, Jenufa, Don Carlos) and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (L'Incoronazione di Poppea).

In concert, Gaële Le Roi performs regularly under the direction of conductors such as Michel Corboz, Edmon Colomer, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Jean-Claude Malgoire, Jacques Mercier, Arie van Beck, Marek Janowsk, James Conlon, Louis Langrée, Fabio Luisi, Christophe Rousset, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Myung-Whun Chung, Michel Plasson and is often invited by such orchestras as the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Academia Santa Cecilia, Orchestre de la Monnaie de Bruxelles. Other projects have included the role of Constance from Les dialogues des Carmelites with L'Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse.

During the season 2002-2003, Gaële Le Roi returned to l'Opéra National de Paris for Martinu's Juliette and Jemmy in Rossini's Guillaume Tell. She has been invited to Washington for the title role in Hippolyte et Aricie with l'Opera Lafayette, where she returned in May 2004 to sing Clarice in Il Mondo della Luna, she appeared also at the Drottningholm Festival this summer singing Oberto in Alcina under the direction of Christophe Rousset. Gaële Le Roi also returned to the Opéra National de Paris singing Zaïre / Les Indes Galantes (William Christie) and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte. In 2004-2005 she could be heard in Boris Godounov and Janacek's From the house of the Dead. Further she will give her debut at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari in a new production from Graham Vick of Enescu's Oedipe, singing the role of Antigone and she will be once again at Opéra National de Paris for a revival of Martinu'e Juliette Clé des Songes and Les Troyens. Other future projects include the creation of Peter Pan by Patrick Burgan singing Tinkebell.

Gaële Le Roi's recordings include: Les Brigands d'Offenbach with John Eliot Gardiner (EMI), Gabriel Fauré's Requiem with Emmanuel Krivine (Denon), La Mort d'Ophélie by Berlioz (Harmonia Mundi) as well as Le Martyre de Saint-Sébastien with l'Orchestre National d'Ile de France et Jacques Mercier (BMG), a selection of J.S. Bach's Cantatas (Arion) ... She has been invited to play several roles for films and television, notably: Mon cher sujet d'Anne-Marie Miéville (Prix de la Jeunesse au Festival de Cannes 1988, Prix du Festival de Belfort et Prix d'Interprétation au Festival de Digne les bains) et Incognito d'Alain Bergala (co-production between La Sept and France 3).
