The German tenor, Horst (Rüdiger) Laubenthal (real name: Neumann), studied music at the Musical Academy of Munich from 1960 until 1965. From 1960 until 1967 he had private singing lessons with Rudolf Laubenthal. In 1966 Horst Laubenthal was first prize-winner of the singing competition VDMK in Berlin.
Since his successful debut in 1967 as Don Octavio in W.A. Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Mozart Festival Weeks in Würzburg, Horst Laubenthal has been part of the elite of lyric tenors. In 1968 he sang the Gomaz in W.A. Mozart’s Zaide at the Festival in Salzburg. In 1968 Laubenthal had his first engagement at the State Opera Stuttgart. In 1970 he became a permanent member of the German Opera Berlin. In 1970 he made his debut as helmsman in The Flying Dutchman at the Festival in Bayreuth and also in 1970, Herbert von Karajan engaged him for the Easter and Summer Festival in Salzburg. In 1972 sang Belmonte at the Glyndebourne Festival. Now W.A. Mozart’s famous roles of tenors took up most of the appointments diary of the singer.
Horst Laubenthal sang in all famous opera houses in the world. He sang at the State Opera in Vienna, Stuttgart, Hamburg State Opera, Munich (Bavarian State Opera), Berlin, Zürich, Lisbon, Catania, at La Scala in Milan, in Palermo, Naples and Turin, at Covent Garden in London, at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, at the Tatre Colon in Buenos Aires, at the Met in New York, in Tokyo, at the Grande Opera in Paris, and other music centres.
Horst Laubenthal’s repertoire comprises all operas of W.A. Mozart. He sang the Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Hans in The Bartered Bride, the prince in Rusalka, The Young Lord by H.W: Henze, Lenski in Eugen Onegin, Cassio in Othello, David in Die Mastersinger von Nürnberg, the Palestrina by Hans Pfitzner, Erik and Lohengrin, Max in Freischütz and Oberon, the Rosenkavalier singer, Lulu and Wozzeck by Alban Berg, Gringoire in Notre Dame by Franz Schmidt and so on...
Since the beginning of his career as a singer, Horst Laubenthal has made a name of himself as a Lieder interpreter and singer of oratorios. He gave song recital evenings in all famous music centres, above all, the evangelists in J.S. Bach’s passions and oratorios, L.v. Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, the 9th Symphony, the oratorios and masses of J. Haydn, Requiem of G. Verdi, works of Rossini, Dvorak, Janacek, The Book with Seven Seals of Franz Schmidt, Benjamin Britten’s War Requiems, Rinaldo of Johannes Brahms. His repertoire includes the pre-classical music of Monteverdi and Cavalli, W.A. Mozart’s Betulia liberata and also music of the modern age: Hugo Wolf’s Corregidor, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, and The Song of the Earth, Igor Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex, Les Noces, Persephone, Alban Berg’s and Udo Zimmermann’s Weiße Rose - Geschwister Scholl.
Horst Laubenthal worked with famous conductors: with Herbert von Karajan, Karl Böhm, Karl Richter, Günter Wand, Rudolf Kempe, Sergiu Celibidache, Leonard Bernstein, Colin Davis, Rafael Kubelík, Lorin Maazel, Sir Georg Solti, Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink... Well-known directors decisively left their marks on his career at the opera: Dr. Günther Rennert, R. Hartmann, Otto Schenk, Terry Hands, Heinrich Hertz, Rudolf Nölte, Götz Friedrich, R. Sellner, Boleslav Barlog, Achim Freyer and Dieter Dorn.
Many films, record and radio productions show the great variety of his repertoire.
