Allan Laino (Conductor, Baritone)

Born: Palmdale, California, USA

The American conductor, baritone singer and music teacher, Allan Laino, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Voice (2002-2006) and his his M.F.A degree in Choral Conducting (2007-2009) at the University of California, Irvine. He completed his D.M.A. in Choral Conducting at the University of Maryland, College Park (2012-2015). He studied conducting with Edward Maclary, Joseph Huszti, James Ross, and Stephen Tucker; and voice with Darryl Taylor and Steven Kronauer.

Allan Laino is a conductor, educator, and singer in the DC metro area. He currently serves as Director of the University Singers at the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music, Drama, and Art at The Catholic University of America (since January 2016), Director of Music Ministry at Western Presbyterian Church, Assistant Conductor of The Washington Chorus, Principal Guest Conductor of The Reston Chorale in Virginia (since August 2014), the College/University Resources & Repertoire Chair for ACDA's MD/DC Chapter, and Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Michael Poplar Springs Catholic Church in Maryland (since August 2015). He has prepared choral ensembles for Benjamin Britten's War Requiem with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Marin Alsop, Broadway Standing Ovations! with the BSO Pops and Jack Everly, Holiday Pops concerts with National Symphony Orchestra Pops and Steve Reineke, the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra, and the Josh Groban Live National Tour.

During his doctoral studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, Allan Laino directed the University Chorale, and was Assistant Conductor for the Chamber Singers when they were featured performers at the 10th World Choral Symposium, performed W.A. Mozart's Great Mass in C Minor with the BSO under Masaaki Suzuki, and performed Bach Cantatas 63 and 110 with the NSO under Helmuth Rilling. From 2012 to 2014, he served as assistant conductor (La Bohème, W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Die Fledermaus) and chorus master (W.A. Mozart's Idomeneo, La Bohème, and Die Zauberflöte) for the Maryland Opera Studio. As part of the MOS New Works Initiative, he music directed the East Coast premiere of Jack Perla’s opera Love/Hate in 2014.

As a singer, Allan Laino is a former member of the Choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the resident professional chamber choir for which he has also guest-conducted in Masses. He has sung as a soloist and chorister with groups such as the Yale/Norfolk Music Festival Chamber Choir, The Bridge Ensemble, The Trinity Chamber Orchestra, the Sunday Night Singers, the Horizon Chamber Choir, and the Pacific Chorale.

As Co-Conductor of the Sunday Night Singers in Palmdale, California (August 2006-August 2012), Allan Laino earned in 2012 First Prize at the World Choir Games in the Mixed Chamber Choir Champions Division. During his tenure as Assistant Director of the Men in Blaque, the group earned First Prize in the Male Chamber Choir category at the 2010 World Choir Games. While directing the vocal programs at Highland High School, University High School, and Quartz Hill High School, his choirs received high recognition at national festivals. He is the 2017-2018 winner of The American Prize—Community Chorus Division.
