The American tenor, conductor and music teacher, David Kurtenbach Rivera, obtained his degree in Vocal Performance and his Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the Oberlin College in Cleveland/Akron, Ohio (1998-2002).
David Kurtenbach is engaged regularly with leading early- and contemporary-music ensembles throughout the Bay Area and North America. He has appeared as soloist with Apollo's Fire (Director: Jeannette Sorrell), Volti (2008-2011), Artists' Vocal Ensemble (AVE), Oakland East Bay Symphony, Oakland Symphony Chorus, Schola Cantorum, and Pacific Mozart Ensemble, and has shared the stage with early-music ensembles Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Magnificat Baroque Ensemble, American Bach Soloists (Director: Jeffrey Thomas), Bach Collegium San Diego (Director: Bach Collegium San Diego) and the Marion Verbruggen Trio. He has performed at the Tanglewood, Ojai, Berkeley summer festivals, and Oregon Bach Festival, and recorded for Innova/Naxos, Koch International, and Soli Deo Gloria. He has premiered vocal works from composers David Lang, Kurt Rohde, Kirke Mechem, Dave Brubeck, and Meredith Monk among others, but his work also focuses on ancient sacred music, having served as Chant Scholar and Cantor as part of the Quartet in Residence at the French National Church in San Francisco. He is currently a member of the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.
Active also as a conductor and teacher, David Kurtenbach served for nine years as conductor of the chorus, assistant music director, and pre-performance lecturer at Festival Opera, receiving critical acclaim for new productions of Susannah, Aida, and Turandot. He currently teaches vocal technique and music theory at Grace Cathedral School for Boys and San Francisco Choral Society (since August 2010), and was Chorus Master at Opera San Jose (August 2008-January 2011). He has lectured at Oberlin College in choral conducting and vocal accompanying, assisted Jeannette Sorrell in a production of George Frideric Handel's Alcina, and mounted a production of Viktor Ullmann's Holocaust chamber opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis. |
