Marie Kuijken (Soprano, Piano)

Born: Belgium

The Belgian soprano and pianist, Marie Kuijken, studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels where she won first prize in the piano class under the guidance of Daniel Blumenthal (1992), and completed her training with chamber music (1993) and harmony (1994). At the same time she cultivated her passion for singing: she studied with Louis Devos, Margreet Honig and since 2000 with Lena Lootens.

Marie Kuijken began her career in the Chœur de chambre de Namur, the Collegium Vocale Gent and La Petite Bande under the direction of her father Sigiswald Kuijken. In 2001 he performed Serpina in Serva padrona by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's at major festivals in Spain, France, Belgium and Switzerland. In 2002 she participated with the baritone Jan Van der Crabben in production of major works of Mozart at the Mozart Festival in Istanbul. In 2003 she took part in the first production in modern times of the intermezzo buffo La Furba e lo Sciocco by Domenico Sarro presented at the Festivals "Folles Journées" in Nantes, Dau Music in Lisbon and La Chaise-Dieu in France. In October 2003 she sang Papagena in Mozart's Magic Flute and the Motets of J.S. Bach on tour in Spain and Belgium. She recently (2004) joined the vocal ensemble La Voix Humaine. With her sister Veronica Kuijken, violinist and pianist, she founded the duo "I Pulcini", which features a variety of formats: two pianos, four hands piano, voice and piano, violin and piano.
