The German conductor, Wolfgang Kelber, received the education and the first musical training in Nürnberg. After graduation he studied school music at Musikhochschule München (College of Music Munich).
From 1979 to 1981 Wolfgang Kelber was active as Kantor at the Christuskirche München. In 1977 he created the Heinrich-Schütz-Ensemble München. Since this time he is occupied intensively with the performance practice of music of 17th and 18th centuries. After the establishment of the Monteverdi-Orchesters München in 1982, both ensembles take part in oratorio literature, particularly music by Claudio Monteverdi and Heinrich Schütz. Starting from 1990 the attention of his work applied for the Bach Cantatas, which documented itself in the Munich concert series Bach Kantate Aktuell.
Wolfgang Kelber is considered as one of the most prominent representatives of early music in South Germany. Apart from other engagements he was guest conductor in Minsk in White Russia and director/conductor of a workshops at the Festival Festliche Tage europäischer Chormusik (Festive days of European choir music) in 1990 in Braunschweig. He has co-operated with prominent representatives of the early music, among them Gustav Leonhardt and Emma Kirkby. |
