Mai Kato (Soprano)

Born: Nishitokyo, Japan

The Japanese soprano, Mai Kato, graduated from the Omiya Koryo High School Music Department in Saitama, Japan. She obtained 1st place in the 55th Tokyo Student Music Concourse of Japan while attending high school. She graduated from Tokyo Geijutsudaigaku with a degree in Musicology emphasizing in vocal music. She received Yuai Association German Lied Competition Award while attending university; received Acanthus Music Award and Do-seikai Award (Best Performer Award in Graduating Class) won at the time of graduation. She completed a summer master’s class at Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" in Leipzig, Germany (August 2009). She received 2nd place in the Yamanote-no-oka Music Competition (2010). She participated in and was a 6th Shizuoka International Opera Competition semi-finalist (2011); received 1st place in the 16th Japan Mozart Music Competition (2012).

Mai Kato has performed in an opera as the Queen of the Night and the role of The Boy in Die Zauberflöte by W.A. Mozart, Bellinda in Dido and Aeneas by Purcell. She has sung as soloist in performances such as George Frideric Handel's Messiah, J.S. Bach's Cantata, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi;s Stabat mater, Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria, Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, Camille Saint-Saëns' Requiem, Johannes Brahms' German Requiem, John Rutter's Requiem, W.A. Mozart's Missa Solemnis and Vesperae. She is a member of MDR Rundfunkchor Leipzig and currently livers in Leipzig, Germany.
