The Korean violinist, artistic director and music pedagogue, Hyo Kang, completed his undergraduate and post-graduate education at the Juilliard School, where he studied with Dorothy DeLay. He also studied with Berl Senofsky at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.
Hyo Kang has led a flourishing and versatile career as violinist, teacher and artistic director for the past five decades. From 1964 to 2003, he has made numerous concert tours as a soloist and chamber musician in the USA, Europe, Asia, Canada, and Central America. As a member of the highly acclaimed Theatre Chamber Players of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. for more than 20 years, he has given many works their American premieres, and enjoyed musical collaborations with artists such as Leon Fleisher, Pina Carmirelli, Walter Trampler and André Watts.
Hyo Kang has been on the faculty of the Juilliard School since 1978 and Pofessor at the Yale School of Music since 2006. He has given master-classes in the USA, Korea, Japan, and Mexico and was on the faculties of the Aspen Music School in Colorado from 1978 to 2005 and the Japan-Aspen Music Festival in Nagano, Japan from 1994 to 1997. His students have distinguished themselves with top prizes at the world's most prestigious competitions and have become concert-masters of major orchestras, members of acclaimed chamber ensembles, and career soloists performing with major orchestras worldwide. His former students include Gil Shaham, Sarah Chang, and Chee-Yun, among many others.
In 1994, Hyo Kang founded Sejong Soloists, a string orchestra, and has directed Sejong’s 500 performances in 120 cities around the world. In 2003, he launched the Great Mountains Music Festival and School in PyeongChang, South Korea, and served as its Founding Artistic Director for from 2004 to 2010.
In March 2003 the government of Korea awarded Hyo Kang the National Arts Medal for his contribution to the arts. In 2010, he was honored with the Daewon Music Awards Grand Prize, the most prestigious music award in Korea. He has been the subject of several feature documentaries for his teaching; the most recent one, Violinist Hyo Kang: Teacher of Genius Musicians, aired on KBS-TV (Korean Broadcasting System television). |
