The Latvian baritone, Kalvis Kalniņš, begn his vocal training in 2009 at the Jāzeps Medins Riga Music High School (Jāzepa Mediņa Rīgas mūzikas vidusskola) of Riga in the class of Krisjanis Norvelis class, from which he graduated with excellence in 2011. During this training period, hee won several local and international competitions. He continued his studies at the Latvian Academy of Music in Jāzeps Vītols (Jāzepa Vītola Latvijas Mūzikas akadēmija), where he obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Krisjana Norvez's class (2011-2015), and his Master of Music degree in the Andželas Goba's class (2015-2017). He also studied at the Vienna Academy of Music and Arts with Professor P. Eedlmann. He has developed a strong partnership with the vocal pedagogue Margarita Gruzdeva, with whom he perfects his vocal skillssince 2016. In 2014-2017, he also attended master-classes with Axel Everaert (Netherlands), Anita Garanča (Latvia), Joy Mamen (UK), and Petteri Salomaa (Finland). His awards and honors include:
1st place in Oksana’s Petrusenko international vocal competition in Herson, Ukraine (2009); Finalist in Gulio Perotti international vocal competition in Uckermunde, Germany (2010); Jazeps Vitols Acadamy of music and AS Swedbank award winner for artistic excellence (2012);
1st place in Ineses Galantes new talents in Riga, Latvia (2014).
Kalvis Kalniņš made his debut at the Latvian National Opera (Latvijas Nacionālā Opera un Balets) as a soloist in George Frideric Handel's oratorio Messiah. He made his debut in Finland as Count Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's opera Le nozze di Figaro at the Helsinki Sibelius Music Academy's performance studio. His repertoire at the Latvian National Opera includes such roles as Valentine and Wagner in Charles Gounod's Faust (October-December 2017), Pēteris Skudrics in Zigmara Liepiņa's Turaidas Rozē (September-October 2017), Biterolf in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser (October-December 2017), Dancaïre in Georges Bizet's Carmen (May-June 2017; October-November 2017), Prince Orlofsky in Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus (October 2016-April 2017; September-December 2017), Papageno in Little Magic Flute", Putnu tirgonis in Jāņa Lūsēna's Putnu operā, Figaro in Gioachino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, etc. Upcoming performance at the Latvian National Opera include: Malatesta in Don Pasquale (August 2018); Papageno in The Little Magic Flute (October 2018). He currently lives in Riga, Latvia. |
