Kalisz, the oldest town in Poland, is one of most resilient centres of polish music life. Significant traditions relate to visits of Frédéric Chopin and Henryk Wieniawski and outstanding European 19th century virtuosos. The Kalisz Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra (Orkiestra Symfoniczna Filharmonii Kaliskiej) gave its first concert - then as the City Symphony Orchestra - on October 19, 1974. Initially, the Orchestra functioned as an association. It was thanks to indefatigable efforts by its members and leaders that it reached artistic standards allowing it to transform itself, in 1980, into a state symphony orchestra. The establishment, in December 1993, of the Kalisz Philharmonic was further confirmation of its rank and a stimulus for continued development. Subsequent years consolidated the efforts of the Kalisz Philharmonic bot only in the region but in the whole of Poland.
The Kalisz Philharmonic Orchestra has performed with outstanding Polish and foreign conductors and soloists, including Stefan Stuligorsz, violinists Wanda Wiłkomirska, Krzysztof Jakowicz and Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, and pianists Lidia Grych-tolówna, Piotr Paleczny, Kevin Kenner, Konstantin Schcherbakov and Janusz Olejniczak. The Orchestra has played with other prominent Polish soloists and conductors, such as: Rafał Blechacz, Ewa Pobłocka (piano), Leszek Możdżer, Wiesław Ochman, Waldemar Malicki, Izabela Kłosińska, Bernard Ładysz, Marek Pijarowski, Tadeusz Wojciechowski, Bogusław Madey.
The Kalisz Philharmonic Orchestra was led by Andrzej Bujakiewicz, then Krzysztof Lewandowski and Mieczysław Gawroński. Since 199 its General and Music Director is Tadeusz Wicherek. Elżbieta Bieniecka was the Orchestra Manager for many years since its foundation. Nowadays, Kalisz Philharmonic Orchestra is seen by artists and critics as one of most out-standing orchestral groups in Poland. |
