The Spanish violinist and conductor, Jorge Jiménez, studied violin at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Barcelona, the HvdK Constantijn Huygens in Zwolle and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. His Baroque violin career took off in 2000 when he became a member of the European Union Baroque Orchestra. Consequently, he was awarded a 2 year scholarship from the Catalan Government to study Historical Violin with Lucy van Dael at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Among his teachers were also professors such as Rachel Podger, Marc Destrube, Remy Baudet, Marie Leonhardt.
Jorge Jiménez' passion for the violin and for music of the highest quality has lead him to direct, conduct and lead international ensembles throughout Europe. He is renowned for his thorough and exciting approach, performing music in the style and on the instruments it was intended for, from Medieval to 21st century. Based between London and Barcelona, his professional career has been developed in England as a member of The King’s Consort and The Retrospect Ensemble, in Spain with Al Ayre Español, in Belgium with B'Rock and in Germany as leader of second violins with Das Neue Orchester. He has also performed with the best early music ensembles in Europe, such as Leonhardt-Consort, Retrospect Ensemble, Academy of Ancient Music, English Baroque Soloists, Leonhardt-Consort, Irish Baroque Orchestra, Concerto Köln, Orquesta Barroca de Mallorca, Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, among others. He has performed under early music specialists such as: Gustav Leonhardt, Robert King, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and Eduardo Lopez Banzo.
In 2010 Jorge Jiménez began his solo career. As a soloist, he has specialized in J.S. Bach and his contemporaries, bringing unacompanied violin music to festivals such as Istambul Akbank Baroque Days and BachFest Cochabamba 2011 and 2012, featuring J.S. Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin. As a soloist, he has toured widely Europe and South America and has performed recitals in Istanbul, Sevilla, Barcelona, London, Manchester, Berlin, Madrid, Paris, Varazdin, Cochabamba.
Jiménez has played on an original 1780 violin made in Barcelona, an Amati copy made by Luis Fernandez in Valladolid in 2006, an anonimous 19th century French violin for romantic repertoire set up by Johannes Loescher and a Medieval Vielle by Morse-Brown 2009. His versatility and eagerness to perform different repertoires brings him to play on a 1680 Vincenzo Ruggieri made in Cremona and a 1797 Neapolitan J&A Gagliano kindly loaned by JumpstartJr Foundation/Jonathan Sparey.
Jorge Jiménez is founder and director of the Tercia Realidad (“innovative and ground-breaking...”), for which he has created and directed programmes presented at festivals and venues such as Varazdin Baroque Evenings (Croatia), Oude Muziek Festival in Utrecht (the Netherlands), Jardines del Real Alcazar in Sevilla, Colegio de Los Ingleses in Valladolid, Circulo de las Artes de Lugo, Universidad de Huelva, Albert Long Hall in Istanbul (Turkry), Stary Sacz Festival in Poland, amongst others. He is also founder of Xacona, ensemble in residence in Girton College Cambridge. They debuted in the Wigmore Hall in London in 2005 and have performed widely in Spain, Holland, Germany and throughout the UK. He has also been invited to lead groups such as La Tempestad, Retrospect Ensemble, Scholars Baroque Ensemble, Accademia dei Desiosi, L'Harmonia del Parnas, Ensemble Fontegara and Solistas de la Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, among others.
Leading and conducting appointments involve collaborations with Forma Antiqva, The Hanover Band, the Spanish Orquesta del Principado de Asturias and Orquesta de Extremadura, the Belgian Philarmonic Orkest van de Vlaamse Opera and Capella Cracoviensis in Poland, the new Berlin based opera company Kiez Oper, the Academy of the Festiwal Bachowski w Świdnica Orchestra in Poland and I Fagiolini. He has also been assistant conductor in the Split National Theater Orchestra, the Orquesta Joven del FeMAS and the Orquesta Joven de la Región de Murcia.
2017 engagements will see Jorge Jiménez as director of the newly born scottish ensemble Laudonia, as conductor of The Hanover Band and Danielle Denise in Buckingham Palace (UK) and leading I Fagiolini within their wide 2017 Monteverdi tour.
