The Swedish pianist, Johan Hugosson, was born into a musical family, made his debut as piano soloist aged 17 with the Nordic Youth Orchestra. He went on to study the piano at the Royal Danish Conservatoire in Copenhagen and then to the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London. His teachers have included Anne Oland, Tom Ernst, Irina Zaritskaya, Yu Chun Yee, Gordon Fergus-Thompson and Joan Havill. During his studies he received many scholarships and grants from several funds in Sweden, notably from the Kungliga Musikaliska Akademin (Royal Swedish Academy of Music) and Konstnärsnämnden (Swedish Arts Grants Committee). At the RCM he won the Beethoven prize, the Chopin prize and other prizes before graduating from the advanced postgraduate course with distinction.
Johan Hugosson performs regularly in Sweden and England in recitals and as a chamber musician. As soloist Johan has played J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, L.v. Beethoven and Sergei Rachmaninov concertos with orchestra. He has also performed throughout Europe, in the USA and in Singapore.
As well as performing both solo and chamber music, Johan Hugosson composes music in different genres. In 1998 he won a composition contest in Sweden for Lundakarnevalen, and at the start of 2007 he published piano pieces for children with the English publisher The Full Pitcher. The same pieces were published in September 2007 by Gehrmans Musikförlag in Sweden in a book called Piano Passion (10 piano pieces). The same year the youth musical Star Kids was performed in London.
Since graduating Johan Hugosson has recorded a CD with solo piano music (2002) including Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition as well as 3 compositions of his own. While at the RCM Johan commissioned a piece called Dance with the Devil from the Swedish composer and friend Albert Schnelzer which he also recorded on the CD. Johan is a fervent advocate of contemporary Swedish music and has given first performances of several works by Albert Schnelzer and recently of two pieces by Stefan Klaverdal, The longing of Eurydice for violin, piano and computer (with Björn Kleiman), at the Centre Culturel Suédois in Paris and The Girl who used to be delight for piano and computer at Palaestra in Lund, Sweden. The latter work was commissioned by Johan.
During 2008-2009 Johan Hugosson is performing J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) in London, Paris and around Sweden. A CD was recorded during a performance in Malmö, Sweden and released in 2009. |
