Gottfried Holzer-Graf (Choral Conductor, Organ)

Born: Mürzzuschlag, Styria, Austria

The Austrian choral conductor, organist and music pedagogue, Gottfried Holzer-Graf, studied music, German studies and musicology in Vienna and Salzburg. Studies of conducting and composition complemented his education. He completed the organ concerto class of Alois Forer with distinction and continued his studies with Flor Peeters and Gaston Litaize. He was awarded Promotion Prize at the V. International Bach Competition in Leipzig and was winner of the improvisation prize at International Bruckner competition in Linz in 1978.

In 1977-1978, Gottfried Holzer-Graf was the initiator and artistic director of the Neuberger Kulturtage, conducted Wochen Alter Musik in Salzburg, produced for ORF early and new music as well as LP's and CD's. He was invited several times to create cultural concepts as well as the support of restorations and new buildings of organ works. Concert tours have taken him through Europe and the USA.

Since 1991, Gottfried Holzer-Graf has been directing church music on the former Stiftskirche, as well as the festival "Musik und Kirche" in Mondsee. Since 1974 he is lecturing at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, most recently the courses of improvisation, general bass, didactics and organ. Since 2000 he is University Professor for organ. During the years 2000-2003, he served as as Dean of the Department of Science and Pedagogy. From 2003 to 2006, he became a lecturer in teaching and also took over interim studies for the duration of the academic year 2005-2006 - together with Vizerektor Dr. Lange - the rector's office. After the rector's election, he took a Sabbatical semester and returned with Wintersemester 2007 as a teacher to the Universität Mozarteum. As a representative of the Rectorate, he is involved in setting up a university course for early music in Innsbruck and performs as an interpreter, improviser and ensemble director.
