The German lutenist, Oliver Holzenburg, received his first musical training on the guitar at the Musikakademie Kassel, and continued to study history, musicology and philosophy in Göttingen and Vienna, before beginning his lute studies with Toyohiko Satoh at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. From 1986 on, he studied with Hopkinson Smith at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, where he graduated in 1993 with a degree of early music, majoring in lute. After 1995, he deepened his knowledge by resuming his studies at the University of Basel.
Oliver Holzenburg is internationally known as a soloist and chamber musician. His musical range extends from the Renaissance to contemporary modern music. He teaches guitar and lute in Switzerland. He is a board member at the Deutschen Lautengesellschaft (German Lute Society) and the Schweizerischen Musikpädagogischen Verband Zentralschweiz (Swiss Music Education Association of Central Switzerland). He is also editor of the Internationalen Lexikon neue Lautenmusik (International Encyclopaedia of new lute music = ILNL).
