The German baritone and singing pedagogue, Mario Hoff, studied singing from 1980 to 1984 with Professor Hermann Christian Polster at the Hochschule für Musik "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" in Leipzig. He studied solo singing in the fields of opera and concert, as well as in vocal pedagogy. Among his important teachers were Professor Siegfried Lorenz and Alois Orth. He also attended master-classes with Professor Norman Shetler and Professor Helmuth Rilling, among others. Hae won prizes at several major singing competitions: in 1984 at the Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Wettbewerb in Leipzig, in 1985 at the Opernsänger-Wettbewerb in Gera (Handel Award), in 1986 at the "Prague Spring" Competition and 1st Prize at the Hans-Pfitzner-Wettbewerb in Hamburg.
From 1985 to 2009 Mario Hoff was engaged as a lyric, cavalier and character baritone at the Deutschen Nationaltheater Weimar; since 2009 as a guest. For many years he has been one of the most sought after opera and concert baritone singers in central Germany and far beyond.
Mario Hoff has a large repertoire of operatic roles, concert works, and an extensive Lieder repertoire. He performs regularly at home and abroad. In addition to performances in important concert halls in Germany (Berliner Philharmonie, Berliner Schauspiel-Haus, Kölner Philharmonie, Gewandhaus and Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Kreuzkirche in Dresden), concert tours have led him Japan, Israel, Russia, France, England, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Lithuania. He was able to gain valuable experience through working with renowned conductors (Lothar Zagrosek, Daniel Barenboim, Jac van Steen, George Alexander Albrecht, Oleg Caetani) and pianists (Norman Shetler, Walter Olbertz, Kenzo Ishii, Thomas Leander, Liese Klahn) and recently, with the writer Peter Hartling, and the actor and director Udo Samel. Various radio, television and CD productions document his vocal performances.
Since 1989, Mario Hoff has also worked as a singing teacher. At the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar, he taught students majoring in singing, as well as members of the Opernstudios der Hochschule and the Deutschen Nationaltheaters Weimar. In 1989 he was appointed honorary professor there. Since 2009, he is Professor of singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Köln. Among his pupils: Robert Reichinek (Tenor). |
