The German soprano, Gabriele Hierdeis, studied at the Musihochschule Frankfurt am Main (university of music) and gratuated with master degrees in the opera- as well as in the concert-section. In 2003 she passed the Konzert-examen, the soloist’s post-graduate qualification that equals the American PHD in performing arts. Gabriele Hierdeis received the scholarship of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German State Scholarship) in 1995, and in 2001 she was awarded the prestigious Lenzewsky-prize for Lied performance.
As a concert soloist Gabriele Hierdeis has performed extensively throughout Germany and Europe and has also been asked to sing in Russia (in Moscow and the city of Perm) and the USA (at Lincoln Center, New York City). Her repertory, which covers Baroque as well as classical, romantic and contemporary styles, includes all the varieties of genres such as oratorio, chamber music and Lied. Most of Germany’s broadcasting corporations have invited her to sing in live programmes and radio productions. Furthermore Gabriele Hierdeis has also recorded many CD's for international labels (e.g.CPO, HR-Klassik, Musicaimmagine, Harmonia Mundi, Brillian Classics, and Musica Sacra).
But singing operas plays a very important role in her artistic life, too: Well known ensembles like Camerata Cologne and La stagione Frankfurt invited her to sing leading parts in baroque operas, e.g. at the Schlosstheater Potsdam, in the famous Baroque theatre of Bayreuth, at the Dresden festival and at the Trigonale Austria.
Besides her career as a classical singer Gabriele Hierdeis has gained a special reputation for performing contemporary music: She has up to now premiered works by Wolfgang Rihm, Helmut Lachenmann, Salvatore Sciarrino and Marc André and has collaborated with conductors like Sylvain Cambreling, Beat Furrer, Franck Ollu, Bernhard Kontarsky, Frieder Bernius, Konrad Junghänel, Michael Schneider and Johannes Debus and performed productions with internationally renowned ensembles like the Viennese Klangforum, the German Ensemble Modern, Musikpodium Stuttgart, La stagione Frankfurt, Cantus Cölln.
One of the centerpieces of her 20th centery-repertory is Luciano Berio’s Sequenza 3, which she has performed in many concerts and which is now documentated on a CD. Her first part in productions of contemporary operas she sang in 2001, when the Frankfurt Opera engaged Gabriele Hierdeis for he world premiers of five short operas of young composers, and during the next season, when the Frankfurt Opera premiered Salvatore Sciarrino’s Macbeth. Additionally Gabriele Hierdeis has sung works of 20th century composers at several festivals such as the German Schwetzinger Festspiele, the Festival d’Automne of Paris, the Steirische Herbst of Graz and the Lincoln Festival of New York City. |
