The Mexican cellist and artistic director, José Luis Herrera, began his formal studies at the Conservatorio de las Rosas, where he received his bachelor's degree with honors, and obtained his master's degree at Kent State University.
Since his debut as a soloist with the Yakima Symphony Orchestra in the city of Yakima, Washington, José Luis Herrera has performed with orchestras in various cities in Mexico and the USA; He has served as principal cellist of several orchestras in Mexico and has maintained an intense activity in chamber music, through workshops, concerts and participation in competitions such as the “Concurso nacional de música de cámara Ollin Yoliztli” and the “Concurso de música de cámara Mateo Oliva”, obtaining 1st Prize on both occasions. He was awarded the Leopold Stipe Award for Excellence in Music Performance, scholarships such as the Fern Anderson Scholarship and the Orchestra Society Scholarship, as well as a full scholarship to pursue graduate studies at Kent State University (Kent, Ohio), under the tutelage of the Miami String Quartet.
As a teacher, José Luis Herrera has given master-classes in cities such as Tijuana, San Miguel de Allende, Torreón, Morelia, among others, in addition to being a full-time professor in the cello department at the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas. He is co-founder (2018) and Artistic Director of the early music ensemble Academia de Música Antigua de Zacatecas. |
