The American bass singer, composer, and vocal arranger, James Hayden, studied Vocal Performance/Opera at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles (Class of 2013). He appeared in the Thornton School of Music productions of Francis Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites as Javelinot, Lee Hoiby’s The Tempest as Stephano, and covered Sarastro in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, receiving additional training at the Operaworks and AIMS in Graz summer programs.
James Hayden has a particular fondness for contemporary and avant-garde repertoire. He recently made his debuts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra as Commander in the world premiere of Annie Gosfield’s War of the Worlds, the Boston Court Theater in Philip Glass’ A Madrigal Opera, and the Industry in their “mobile opera,” Hopscotch. He also premiered the part of Freddie Stowers in Matthew Aucoin's Crossing Suite at Music Academy of the West. In the past year he also recorded three roles in Patrick Cassidy’s new opera, Dante, with the LA Opera Young Artists, was the baritone soloist in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G-Minor with the Los Angeles Master Chorale (of which he is a member since 2012-2013 season), and attended Marilyn Horne’s artist training program, the Music Academy of the West. Other notable engagements include singing on the “Game of Thrones: Live” concert tour, performing two concerts with the Rolling Stones on their 50th Anniversary Tour, and two appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
James Hayden's voice can be heard on many movie and video game soundtracks, including Star Wars: Episode VII, Godzilla, Minions, Jurassic World, The Hangover Part III, and League of Legends. When not embodying villains or wise priests on the operatic stage, he writes award-winning pop a cappella charts for ensembles in Southern California and Texas. Hae also directs a co-ed pop a capella group at John Burroughs High School. He currently lives in Los Angeles, California. |
