The German choral conductor, Albrecht Haupt, studied at the Universities of Jena and Leipzig first music and art history, then at the Leipzig's Musikhochschule with a focus on church organ and conducting. He was influenced especially by Thomas organist Karl Richter, Thomaskantor Günther Ramin and Professor Diethard Hellmann. Later he moved to the music academies and universities of Stuttgart, Esslingen (with Professor Hans Arnold Metzger) and Tübingen, and passed the A-exam.
In 1958 Albrecht Haupt became Kantor at the Martin-Luther-Kirche in Ulm and later was appointed also as the district Kantor. He remained in this office until his retirement in 1995. As a district Kantor of "Evangelischen Kirchenbezirkes Ulm" he was awarded the title of a church music director. He led the choirs and ensembles of the Martin-Luther-Kirche and conducted many important works, especially the cantatas and oratorios of J.S. Bach, but also many other works from Baroque to modern. Since 1959 he has been director of the independent "Ulmer Kantorei", now governed by the Martin-Luther-Kirche, a post which he has to this day. Under his aegis all the major oratorio major works have been performed.
In 1976 Albrecht Haupt founded the Ulmer Universitätschor (Ulm University Choir). In 1991, he received the title of a university music director. Many oratorio works of the 20th century literature have been premiered in Ulm or south Germany under his leadership, for example, works by Leoš Janáček, Béla Bartók, Carl Orff and Leonard Bernstein.
