Jamie Hall (Bass-Baritone)

Born: Harworth, Nottinghamshire, England

The English bass-baritone, Jamie W. Hall, is a versatile musician who occupies multiple roles on the concert platform. Foremost a soloist with a wide repertoire of oratorio and song, he is also an experienced consort and choral singer working with leading ensembles, including the BBC Singers, a choral director, coach, and chorus master, as well as a composer of published choral works which have been performed across the globe, recorded and broadcast on radio. Since leaving the Nottinghamshire mining village where he grew up, Jamie Hall has relished living in new places, meeting new people and facing new challenges. Even before completing his studies he was making a living as a singer and he found himself a full-time member of the BBC Singers just six years after his first ever singing lesson.

Possessed of an unusually rich and mellifluous bass baritone voice which is as comfortable with Renaissance polyphony as it is with the contemporary and avant-garde, Jamie Hall is in demand as a concert soloist, performing with choirs, choral societies and orchestras across the country. Recent performances include broadcasting Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's newly discovered St John Passion (aria) with Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light with the composer and Southern Sinfonia, J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) (Christus) with Paul Leddington Wright and the English Chamber Orchestra, and also with Guildford Cathedral Choir; Verdi’s Requiem with Stephen Cleobury (CUMS) and again at Sherborne Abbey as part of the Sherborne festival. He has broadcast as a soloist on BBC Radio 3 most notably singing Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle under David Hill, George Frideric Handel's Dixit Dominus with James O’Donnell and St James’ Baroque, and Eric Zeisl’s Requiem Ebraico with the BBC Concert Orchestra under Johannes Wildner. Other highlights include Tippett's A Child of Our Time at Chichester Cathedral, G.F. Handel's Messiah with Charivari Agreable, W.A. Mozart's Requiem with the London Concertante, J.S. Bach's B Minor Mass (BWV 232) with the 18th Century Concert Orchestra and Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah at the Yehudi Menuhin School.

Since January 2009, Jamie Hall has been a member of the BBC Singers with whom he has performed and broadcast an astonishing array of music from the medieval to the cutting-edge, in languages ranging from Maori and Inuit to Sanskrit with most of the European languages in between. He has visited iconic concert venues across the world and performed countless premieres in the presence of many of our leading composers. He also performs and records with other ensembles and has made numerous recordings for film and TV including the premiere recording, performance and TV broadcast of the late Robin Gibb’s Titanic Requiem. He has a passion for liturgical choral music and regularly dons a cassock to sing with the choirs of HM Chapel Royal, Tower of London, Temple Church, Westminster Abbey Choir, Winchester Cathedral and St. George’s, Windsor.
