The Swiss organist, Heinrich Gurtner, attended the teacher's seminar; then he made studies in music under the tutelage of Kurt Wolfgang Senn (organ) and Pierre Souvairan (piano) in Bern. Further studies led him to Paris with Maurice Duruflé and Den Haag with Adriaan Engels.
From 1949 until 1966 Heinrich Gurtner was organist at St. Peters in Bern; from 1966 until 1989 he was organist at Bern Minster, teaching activities at the conservatory in Bern, concerts in Europe and North America. In 1974he received the Music prize offered by the city of Bern. Following his retirement as Minster Organist, Heinrich Gurtner continued his concert activities until 2000.
