The Brazilian Brazilian conductor and educator, Caio Guimarães, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree from Escola Municipal de Música de São Paulo, where he studied recorder, piano performance and clarinet; and his Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is completing his Doctor of Music degree at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, studying with Dr. Besty Burleigh, Dr. Dominick DiOrio and Prof. Walter Huff, and minoring in Music History and Historical Performance (Harpsichord/Basso Continuo).
In Brazil, Caio Guimarães worked with choral ensembles as well as productions of musical theater and opera. He conducted workshops of Broadway titles such as Next to Normal, Avenue Q, Legally Blonde and The Last 5 Years. In 2016-2017 he served as pianist/coach in the Theatro São Pedro Opera Studio playing recitals of art songs and serving as a staff pianist for the academy. Caio was also an active member of São Paulo State University (UNESP) opera studio conducting workshops of W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute and The Impresario and performing Bob in Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief. and.
Caio Guimarães is an active choral artist in the Midwest and was recently appointed Chorus Master for the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic after having served as their Assistant Conductor and Interim Director. The 2023-2024 CIP program includes Verdi’s Requiem, choruses from W.A. Mozart's Idomeneo, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, among others. In addition, he serves as Music Director at First United Methodist Church in Columbus, Indiana and Assistant Conductor for the Bloomington Chamber Singers.
Caio Guimarães will appear as a Masterclass Fellow in the NCCO 10 National Conference, in Atlanta in November. Caio was honored to conduct in the Graduate Masterclass at the 2023 ACDA National Conference in Cincinnati, OH where he was mentored by Dr. André Thomas. In 2022, he was named a Conducting Fellow in the International Choral Conducting Masterclass at Baylor University, mentored by Dr. Richard Sparks, Dr. Brian Schmidt and Martina Batič.
Collegiate roles include Assistant Chorus Master for the Indiana University Opera Theater productions of L’Elisir d’amore (Donizetti), Parsifal (Wagner), Falstaff (Verdi) and Ainadamar (Golijov) as well as serving as Assistant Conductor for NOTUS – IU Contemporary Ensemble, The Singing Hoosiers, and University Singers. He also directed Pro Cantare and IU All Campus Choir. As an Associate Instructor with the Choral Department at Indiana University (since August 2018), he had the opportunity to serve as Assistant Conductor position for the IU Oratorio Chorus, which will perform Orff’s Carmina Burana, and for all other concert choirs at Jacobs, as well as assistant chorus master for the IU Opera Theater, and teaches undergraduate Conducting Techniques courses.
Caio Guimarães is very excited to be in his third season working with the Bloomington Chamber Singers, in his second year as assistant conductor. He currently lives in Bloomington, Indiana. |
