The Austrian bass-baritone and pianist, Johannes Gisser, gained his first musical experience as a member of the Wiener Sängerknaben in 1975-1979. He also studied piano, violin and clarinet. After graduating from high school in Vienna, he studied music education at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna with a major in piano (Professor Anna Pfeiffer) and singing (Professor Uwe C. Harrer and Professor Kurt C. Hofbauer). He received his Diploma with distinction in 1991.
From 1990 Johannes Gisser worked as an accompanist at the Stadttheater St. Pölten. Since 1997, he is a member of the Wiener Staatsoperchor and as such performs repeatedly as a soloist. In addition to many solo parts in the Wiener Staatsoper, he appeared as a guest in the role of Soldier in Verdi's Jerusalem guest at Milan’s La Scala in 2001 (Conductor: Zubin Mehta) and as 2.Gefangener in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio at the Salzburg Festival in 2009 under Daniel Barenboim. Other guest appearances have taken him to Germany, Holland, Greece, Taiwan and Japan.
Besides his work at the Wiener Staatsoper, church music is especially important for Johannes Gisser. Since 2003 he is a soloist of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle. He can often be heard in masses and oratorios. The bass solo parts of Messiah by George Frideric Handel, Johannes-Passion (BWV 245), and Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) by J.S. Bach, Schöpfung by J. Haydn and Mozart's Requiem are also part of his repertoire as well as Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah and Schubert's Lieder cycles Winterreise and Schwanengesang.
His pianistic activity (he played as the time Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue at the opening of St.Pöltener Festspielhaus with the NÖ Landesjugendorchester) appeared in recent years in the background due to his work in the Wiener Staatsoperchor, all the more now with his activity with the Wiener Comedian Harmonist. Another artistic preference are the Viennese songs. |
