The Belgian recorder plasyer, Geert Van Gele, studied at Artesis Hogeschool in Antwerp (Class of 1986) , at Hogeschool Antwerpen (1982-1990) and at several conservatories in Flanders with honours.
After finishing his studies, Geert Van Gele went on to co-found the Flanders’ Recorder Quartet. For 10 years (October 1985-February 1995) he performed and recorded with the Quartet in Europe and both North- and South America, winning along the way several important international competitions. Since then he has pursued a solo-career, collaborating intensely with harpsichordist Guy Penson, lutenist Jurgen De bruyn and harpist Bill Taylor. He is a founding member of Sospiri Ardenti (since January 1998), an ensemble focusing on staged chamber music performances from the Baroque era, as well as Quadrivium, ensemble for Medieval music.
As a soloist Geert Van Gele went is admired as much for his interpretations of J.S. Bach and his performances of early Italian Baroque music as for his mastery of contemporary recorder literature - all of which repertoires he has recorded on CD. In 2009 he founded the record label, Kattenberg Recordings. He considers himself a recorder player first of all, but also frequently performs on harpsichord with Sospiri Ardenti and Ellen Delahanty, organetto with Quadrivium, and bass guitar with Belgian rock band Prins Willem Alexander.
Geert Van Gele is Teacher of recorder and early music at Academie voor Muziek en Woord Wilrijk (since 1987). He is regularly invited to give master-classes in Europe and the USA. He is also connected to the folkband The Quest as a sound engineer. He currently lives in Antwerp, Belgium. |
