Myrtha Garbarini (Soprano)

Died: January 6, 2015 - Buenos Aires, Argentina

The Argentinean soprano, Myrtha Garbarini, began her singing studies at the age of 14 with the eminent contralto Lydia Kindermann, remembered from her career at the Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires, continuing her higher music studies at the Conservatorio Nacional "Carlos López Buchardo".

Myrtha Garbarini made her debut very young as a singer of chamber music and oratorio and lyric soprano at Teatro Colón and Argentino de La Plata, performing throughout her career prestigious roles in more than 25 operas, such as: Le Nozze di Figaro, Zauberflöte, La Finta Giardiniera, Il Re Pastore, Don Giovanni by W.A. Mozart; La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, Gianni Schicchi, La Rondine by Puccini; La Traviata by Verdi; L'Elisir d'amore by Donizetti; Orfeo et Euridice by Gluck; L'Ormindo by Cavalli; Il Crescendo by Cherubini; Dido and Aeneas by Purcell; Il Mondo della Luna by Haydn; La Scala di Seta by Rossini; Albert Herring by Benjamin Britten; Manon by Massenet; Carmen by Georges Bizet and La Cechina by Piccinni, under the direction of eminent Argentinean and foreign conductors. Among her national operas stand out: Marianita Limeña by Sciammarella, Sueño de Alma by López Buchardo and La Zapatera Prodigiosa by Juan José Castro.

Under the direction of Maestro Karl Richter Myrtha Garbarini sang in the oratorios: Johannes-Passion (BWV 245), Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244), Mass in B minor (BWV 232) by J.S. Bach; The Creation by Haydn; Messiah by George Frideric Handel; German Requiem by Johannes Brahmss; Requiem of Gabriel Fauré; Requiem of W.A. Mozart; Missa Solemnis and Symphony No. 9 by L.v. Beethoven and Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.

Myrtha Garbarini was co-founder of Opera de Cámara of the Teatro Colón and participated in numerous concerts of the Sociedad Amigos de la Música y Asociación Wagneriana. She was awarded with the Municipal Prize of Music of the City of Buenos Aires and with the Prize of the Critics of Buenos Aires. She was a member of the Academia Nacional de Música (National Academy of Music).

Parallel to her artistic activity, Myrtha Garbarini taught at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música "Carlos López Buchardo" and the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón, where she served for more than thirty years as Professor of Vocal Technique. She was also Professor at the Centro de Altos Estudios Musicales "FRANZ LISZT".

Myrtha Garbarini sang at the Festivals of Washington (the USA) and Vienna (Austria), also appeared on stages in Salzburg, Baden-Baden, Río de Janeiro, Asunción, Montevideo, Santiago of Chile and numerous cities of Argentina. She was in the jury of numerous international competitions, among which "Plácido Domingo" in Vienna and "Viña del Mar" in Chile stand out.

The journalist and musical critic Enzo Valenti Ferro says: "Myrtha Garbarini is one of the best Argentinean singers of last the twenty years, that thanks to a solid approach and to a responsible professional discipline, the noble beauty of her voice, surprising fresh conserved until recent years as its range in the acute registry, and the impeccable and musical line of her bright singing that from its beginnings in the lyric scene and before, in the concert and chamber music, made her a cultivated and reliable singer. Perhaps one of the best tributes than can be given to this singer is to even say that her presence on the stage has always been, in the works that were not compatible to her temperament and the nature of her lyric voice, guaranty of musical security and vocal quality "
