Gloriæ Dei Cantores (Choir)

Founded: 1988- Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA

Gloriæ Dei Cantores (Singers to the Glory of God) (= GDC) holds a passionate dedication to illuminate truth and beauty through choral artistry, celebrating a rich tradition of Sacred choral music from Gregorian chant through the 21st. century. The choir, based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, consists of 40 men and women, aged 18-60, from a wide variety of occupations, denominations and musical backgrounds.

Gloriæ Dei Cantores has received extensive critical acclaim for its artistic elegance, performance authenticity, and compelling spirituality of sacred choral music of all styles. Sharing its vision of inspiration and hope, Gloriæ Dei Cantores has toured extensively, touching the hearts of audiences in 24 countries in Europe, Asia, and North America, singing in 18 languages. The choir has appeared on the concert stage and in recordings with Keith Lockhart, John Williams, Samuel Adler, Mark O’Connor, Stephen Cleobury, Vladimir Minin, and the late George Guest, Mary Berry, and Margaret Hillis, among others. The Boston Globe labeled Gloriæ Dei Cantores' concert performances as "Beautifully finished, but richly emotional." Gloriæ Dei Cantores is also one of the few choirs to be praised for "expert renditions of Gregorian chant." (New York Times).

Highlights of the choir’s career include three invitational tours of Russia, the opening of the 900th anniversary of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice; Rockefeller Tree Lighting Ceremony, New York City; live broadcasts with the BBC; the soundtrack of Lorenzo’s Oil; featured on the soundtrack of the television series drama finale Detroit 1-8-7, and performances in some of the finest concert halls throughout Europe, including the Great Hall of the Conservatory, Tchaikovsky Hall, and the Hall of Columns in Moscow; Kapella Hall in St. Petersburg; St. John Smith's Square in London; and many others.

The coir's discography of over 50 recordings is distributed in the USA through Naxos of America, Inc. Their expansive discography - encompassing a rich tradition of sacred choral music from Gregorian chant to the 21st century - includes five commissioned world premieres, as well as the works of 150 composers, 140 works recorded for the first time, and 125 works available only in this discography. Composers include J.S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, W.A. Mozart, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, and Franz Liszt, Alan Hovanhess, Herbert Howells, Edvard Grieg, Howard Hanson, William Mathias, and numerous others.

The choir sings weekly worship services and regular concerts at the Church of the Transfiguration.

Elizabeth C. Patterson, who founded Gloriæ Dei Cantores in 1988 and served as its Director/Conductor until 2012, is now the Conductor Emeritus for the choir. The current Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Gloriæ Dei Cantores is Richard K. Pugsley.
