The American baritone, John R. Fulton III, studied at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Greensboro before earning his Master of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York (2002) and his Professional Studies Degree at Manhattan School of Music. He has studied voice with Metropolitan Opera baritone Mark Oswald, has collaborated with conductors Steuart Bedford and Hal France and has been directed by Catherine Malfitano, Ken Cazan and James Robinson. He won the prestigious Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau Wolf Lieder Competition in New York in 2003, and was awarded the Richard F. Gold Career Grant and the Apprentice Artist Award at Central City in 2005.
In 2003 and 2005, as an apprentice artist at Central City Opera, John Fulton’s his roles included John/Tom in Face On The Barroom Floor, Barney Ford in Gabriel's Daughter, and the Narrator and soloist in The Quartet of the Defeated in Paul Bunyan. In the summer of 2006, he returned to Berkshire Opera for Prince Yamadori in Madama Butterfly and Peter in Hänsel und Gretel.
John Fulton has performed Figaro in Il Barbiere Di Siviglia and Marquis d'Obigny in La Traviata with Opera Colorado, Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro for Opera Theatre of the Rockies, and Count Ceprano in Rigoletto and David in A Hand Of Bridge with Berkshire Opera. He has additionally taken part in several outreach projects for Cincinnati Opera including the part of Robert Garner in Richard Danielpour's Margaret Garner.
During the 2007-2008 season John Fulton debuted as a member of the New York Harlem Productions Inc. touring production of Porgy and Bess. With this company he has performed the roles of Jake, Crown and Jim in numerous opera houses across Europe, including the Stadtstheater Hannover, the Carré Theater in Amsterdam and the Strasbourg Theater to name a few. Fulton has also recently completed two seasons with the Arizona Opera in the Marian Roose Pulin Young Artist Studio
During the 2008-2009 season he performed the roles of Masetto in Don Giovanni and Sciarrone in Tosca and the following season he performed the Cappadocian in Salome, Schaunard La Bohème and Fiorello/Police Sergeant in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Arizona Opera. During 2008-2009 season, he performed at Arizona Opera Belcore in the School Tour performances of The Mini Elixir of Love, Masetto in W.A. Mozart’s Don Giovanni (2009) and Sciarrone in Puccini’s Tosca (2009). In addition, he undertudied the roles of Pish-Tush in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado and Belcore in Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love. Other recent engagements include performances of the role Morales in Carmen and Crown in Porgy and Bess at Tulsa Opera, Fiorello in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Michigan Opera Theatre and the role of Marullo in Rigoletto in concert with the Westfield Symphony Orchestra in New Jersey.
During the summer of 2011 John Fulton made two important concert debuts; the first under the baton of Lorin Maazel as a part of the Castleton Festival in which he sang the baritone arias of Gershwin's masterpiece Porgy And Bess, and the second in a similar concert presentation under Bramwell Tovey with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood. In 2011-2012 season he sings with Arizona Opera A Cappadocian in Salome, Schaunard in La bohème, and Fiorello in The Barber of Seville. Fulton looks forward to making a debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in a concert-version of Porgy snd Bess under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle.
