The Finnish tenor, choral conductor, organist and composer, Eero Emil Erkkilä, studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, receiving his diplomas as cantor and organist in 1962; and continued his studies at the Conservatory of Music Department, receiving singer and organist diplomas in 1966. He also studied choral conducting and composition, and made study trips to Italy 1970, Sweden in 1974 and England in 1975, 1978 and 1983.
Eero Erkkilä served as organist at Töölö Church in Helsinki from 1962 to 1967, and was regular guest soloist at the Finnish National Opera from 1964 to 1968 and from 1970 to 1987. In 1968-1970 he was soloist at the National Opera and choir director from 1975 to 1987. He was Music Director of the Keski-Pohjanmaan (Central Ostrobothnia) in 1967-1969, and the Helsinki Cathedral parish cantor from 1970 to 1987. He taught singing at the Sibelius Academy from 1968 to 1975 and at the Theatre Academy from 1968 to 1970.
Eero Erkkilä has appeared in concerts as a singer and organist since 1966. He has also directed several choirs, including the Keski-Pohjanmaan maakuntakuoro (The Provincial Choir of Central Ostrobothnia) (1966-1971), the Polyteknikkojen Kuoro (The Polytechnic Choir) (1969-1971), the Helsingin katedraaliKUORO (Helsinki Cathedral Choir) (1973-1987), and Chorus Ecclesiae Finlandiae choir (1981-1982). He founded the Vexilla Regis Church Music Festival at Lohtaja and was its Artistic Director from 1979 to 1987. He was awarded the titles director cantus (1971), director musices (1977), and musiikkineuvos (1992). |
