The Swedish tenor, Niklas Engquist, studied singing as well as French horn at the Malmö Academy of Music.
A long-time choir singer, Niklas Engquist recently launched a solo career and he has quickly become one of Scandinavia’s most sought-after tenors for concerts. He has a vast repertoire including masses, oratorios and song cycles by J.S. Bach, L.v. Beethoven, Berlioz, Benjamin Britten, Dietrich Buxtehude, Dvorak, George Frideric Handel, Haydn, Felix Mendelssohn, Monteverdi, W.A. Mozart, Rossini and Schubert.
Niklas Engquist regularly appears with leading Scandinavian orchestras such as the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Stavanger Symfoniorkester, Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Århus Symphony Orchestra, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Odense Symphony Orchestra, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Concerto Copenhagen (Director: Lars Ulrik Mortensen) and Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra in New York. Many of his concerts have been broadcasted on Swedish as well as on Danish radio and he has appeared in several broadcasts on Swedish television. He has collaborated with conductors such as Giordano Bellincampi, Olof Boman, Gregor Bühl, Thomas Dausgaard, Steven Devine, Vincent de Kort, Peter Dijkstra, Rubén Dubrovsky, Marcus Edgar, Gary Graden, Daniel Harding, Tõnu Kaljuste, Louis Langrée, Stephen Layton, Fredrik Malmberg, Stefan Parkman, Andrew Parrott, Raphaël Pichon, Tobias Ringborg, Morten Schuldt-Jensen, Marc Soustrot and Robin Ticciati.
Engagements in 2017 included Gastone in La Traviata with Opera South, W.A. Mozart’s Requiem in Nyköping, J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) in Stockholm, Falköping and Enköping, G.F. Handel’s Messiah in Copenhagen with Leipziger Kammerorchester, J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) and Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11) in Moss, Halden, Sarpsborg and Fredrikstad with the Norwegian Wind Ensemble, J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) in Stockholm, J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in Stockholm with Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble, Haydn’s Nelson Mass with Västerås Sinfonietta and J.S. Bach’s Magnificat (BWV 243) with Malmö Symphony Orchestra. 2018 has so far included Pastore and Apollo in Monteverdi L’orfeo in Lund, cantatas by J.S. Bach in Rheinsberg and Wittstock, J.S. Bach’s Actus Tragicus (BWV 106) in Stockholm, W.A. Mozart’s Coronation Mass in Enköping, J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion in Stockholm, F. Mendelssohn’s Choral Cantatas in Stockholm, Haydn’s Nelson Mass in Stockholm and a recital in Neuruppin (Germany). |
