The Canadian pianist and teacher, (Judith) Marilyn Engle, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School of Music in New York in 1969, and her MSc Music degree also from the Juilliard School of Music in 1970, and her MA degree in New York in 1975. Her doctoral studies at New York University have focused on the area of rhetorical theory as it applies to musical performance. Her piano studies in Calgary with Gladys Egbert and in New York with Ilona Kabos led to first prizes of many national and international competitions, including the 1966 CBC Talent Festival and the 1969 J.S. Bach International Competition in Washington, DC, and the MTNA Competition. She continued her training with Canada Council support in Geneva in 1970 with Nikita Magaloff, and in Europe with Peter Feuchtwanger and in New York in 1970-1975 with Adele Marcus and Jeaneane Dowis.
Marilyn Engle recorded three works by J.S. Bach (1970, CBC) and gave concerts and broadcasts in Canada and the USA and several recitals 1975-1976 for the New York Friends of Mozart Society. She is also heard frequently in concert and on radio with the chamber ensemble, Aubade, of which she was a founding member.
In 1975 Marilyn Engle joined the Department of Music of the University of Calgary, where she continued to teach in 2005. She is also a professor at the Mount Royal College Conservatory (program for gifted youth)), and has been a visiting teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music's Glenn Gould School, the University of Toronto, Oberlin College Conservatory, Academie Franco-Americaine, and other institutes.
Marilyn Engle has performed, taught, and lectured widely in North America, Europe, Japan, and Israel. She was a faculty member and performer for several years in Oberlin's summer program in Italy as well as the Niagara Chamber Music Festival (ISMA). She has given-classes and residencies at many centers internationally including, the Glenn Gould Professional School, the University of Toronto and New York University. Engle has adjudicated the Canadian Chopin and Eckhardt-Gramatté competitions. In recent years she has received several Teaching Excellence Awards from The University of Calgary Students Union. Her paper on Gladys Egbert was published in 1993. Her pupils include Lana Henchell and Michael Kim. Her compact disc, "Dances, Dreams...," is forthcoming. |
