The Swedish baritone, Håkan Ekenäs, is currently doing postgraduate opera studies at the Benjamin Britten International Opera School, where he is a Karaviotis Scholar.
Håkan Ekenäs performed the role of the Japanese envoy in Igor Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol at the Royal Opera in Stockholm in their 2002-2003 season. At the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), he has performed three roles for the Benjamin Britten International Opera School: Officer in Dialogues des Carmélites, Altomaro in Sosarme and Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucretia. He sang Pilate in J.S. Bach’s St John Passion (BWV 245) at St John’s Smith Square with the City of London Chamber Choir, and appeared as a baritone soloist with the choir in two Christmas concerts at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and at St Martin-in-the-Fields.
More recent engagements include a recital in Beaumaris, Wales, with pianist Peter Møllerhøj, and a concert in Wells Cathedral with Emma Kirkby, James Bowman, Peter Harvey and the Somerset Chamber Choir, where he sang solos in Purcell’s Hail, Bright Cecilia, George Frideric Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum and Benjamin Britten’s Hymn to Saint Cecilia. Håkan recently performed as a soloist in J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) with Peter Schreier and the RCM Chamber Choir at St John’s Smith Square. He also performed the role of Leporello in a concert with highlights from Mozart’s Don Giovanni together with Sir Thomas Allen as Don Giovanni. As part of the From Sweden Project in Wigmore Hall he participated as a soloist in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music.
Håkan very recently sang Christus in J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with Gary Graden and
S:t Jacobs Chamber Choir in Stockholm. |
