The Australian conductor, Paul Dyer, studied piano and harpsichord at Sydney Conservatorium with and undertook postgraduate studies with Bob van Asperen at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague gaining his Soloist Diploma. While in Holland he performed with many major orchestras and undertook ensemble direction and orchestral studies with Sigiswald Kuijken and Frans Brüggen.
Paul Dyer is one of Australia's leading specialists in period performing styles. He founded the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra in 1990 as a natural outcome of his long experience as a performer and teacher of Baroque and Classical music, and has been the Orchestra's Artistic Director since that time. In Australia, he has a busy career directing the Orchestra and as a harpsichord and Fortepiano soloist as well as continuo player with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Orchestra, Australia Ensemble, Australian Chamber Orchestra and Opera Australia. He has conducted the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra and following his debut with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in 2000, he has appeared as Guest Conductor in 2001, 2002 & 2003. He has also conducted the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Vancouver and recently the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, London.
Paul Dyer has performed with many prominent soloists including Graham Pushee, Andreas Scholl, Cyndia Sieden, Eilzabeth Wallfisch, Andreas Staier, Marc Destrubé, Christoph Prégardien, Hidemi Suzuki, Manfredo Kraemer, Andrew Manze, Yvonne Kenny and Emma Kirkby. In 1998 he made his debut in Tokyo with countertenor Derek Lee Ragin, leading an ensemble of Brandenburg Orchestra soloists. As a recitalist, he has toured Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the USA, playing in Carnegie Hall in New York. In August/September 2001 he toured with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra to Europe with guest soloist, Andreas Scholl appearing in Vienna, France, Germany and London (Proms) and conducted a highly successful series of concerts with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in KL.
An inspiring tutor, Paul Dyer is in constant demand as a teacher of harpsichord and performance practices in period styles. He is the presenter of the Inflight program “Symphony” on Qantas International flights and is a Patron of St Gabriel’s School for Hearing Impaired Children. In 1995 he received a Churchill Fellowship, and in 2003 he was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal for his services to Australian society and the advancement of music.
Paul Dyer has won numerous awards for his CD recordings with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, including the 1998, 2001 and 2005 ARIA Awards for Best Classical Recording. In 2000, his Orchestra's first International Recording featuring Andreas Scholl was released on the Decca label and has since won many awards. In December 2002, his latest CD recording with the Orchestra and Choir of the Brandenburg was released featuring music for Christmas "Noël! Noël!". |
