The French pianist, Jean-Sébastien Dureau, began studying piano in Lyon, his hometown. He graduated in 1996 with premier prix in piano and chamber music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris in the classes of Jean-François Heisser, Christian Ivaldi and Alain Planès. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon, where he perfected his playing with Géry Moutier. In 1998 he met the famous Hungarian pianist and teacher Gyorgy Sebök, and decided to follow him to Bloomington, the USA. Under this major influence, he studied two years at Indiana University, where he met also Janos Starker, Reiko Nerik, Franco Gulli, and Leonard Hokanson, among others. He graduated from the University in 2001 with the Artist Diploma.
Back in France Jean-Sébastien Dureau collaborated with many musicians (Valérie Aimard, Pablo Schatzman, Mari Suzuki) and composers and he had the chance to perform works written for him by Eric Dartel, Lùis Rizo-Salom, and György Kurtág. Winner of the Maria Canals International Competition in Barcelona, he also received the Lavoisier scholarship from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the support of Hewlett Packard France and Mécénat Musical Société Générale.
Jean-Sébastien Dureau just recorded a CD devoted to J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) and two works by György Kurtág and conducts a regular concert activities, both as a soloist and in chamber music. He is also artistic director of the Association "Les Artambules" and "Festival de Musique de Chambre du Larzac".
