The German bass-baritone, Johannes von Duisburg, started his vocal training at school. Aged 20, he made his debut as a soloist at the Stadttheater Brandenburg. After moving to former West-Berlin, he studied and made his degree at the Universität der Künste there. Throughout these studies, he joined the master-class of Kammersänger Professor Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. His regulare voice theacher was Kammersänger Peter Gougaloff. 1989 he got the 1st prize at the Young Artists Competition sponsored by the Philip Morris Company, 1992 the 2nd prize in the Opera Singers Competition of Staatsoper Hannover, 1995 than the O.E.Hasse Award for outstanding stage-performers.
In 1991, Johannes von Duisburg accepted a contract at the Mecklenburgische Staatstheater Schwerin and made his role-debuts as Don Pizarro in Fidelio and as the word`s youngest Fliegender Holländer. Since 1992, he has worked as a freelance singer over the world, with guest engagements at, among others, the opera houses of Geneva, Lisbon, Florence, Cagliari, Napoli, Rome (Accademia di Santa Cecilia and Teatro dell`Opera), Bologna, Moskow, Prague, Strasbourg and the Festivals of Wexford and Bregenz. Roles he performed includeJochanaan in Salome, Amonasro in Aida, Kaspar in Der Freischütz, Escamillo in Carmen, Scarpia in Tosca and Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte. In November 2001 he sang Amonasro in Tokyo with José Cura as Radames.
During the 2002-2003 season, Johannes von Duisburg performed Telramund in Lohengrin at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna with Maestro Daniele Gatti as well as Der Fliegende Holländer at Teatro San Carlo Napoli. In 2003-2004 season he made his debuts as Wanderer in Siegfried at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona under Bertrand de Billy in a production of Professor Harry Kupfer. 2004-2005 season followed with the role-debut of Wotan in Die Walküre at Breslau`s Jahrhunderthalle in a production of Professor Hans-Peter Lehmann. Later he repeated the role of Der Fliegende Holländer at Teatro dell`Opera di Roma and Telramund in Lohengrin at TeatroVerdi Trieste. At the Oper-Köln he sang Don Pizarro in Fidelio and in July Amonasro in a new production of Aida at the Savonlinna-Opera-Festival with Michele Crider in the title role. 2006-2007 season: new production of Salome at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Vilnius (director: David Alden), Lohengrin in Aachen, role-debut of John Claggart in Billy Budd (director: Willy Decker) at the Operahouse Köln, Jesus in J.S. Bach`s St.John`S Passion (BWV 245) (director: Robert Wilson) in Vilnius and Wotan in Die Walküre at the Festivals of Ravenna and Ravello; 2007-2008 season: Dead Man Walking (director:Nicolaus Lehnhoff) at Theater an der Wien Salome and Die Walküre, debut as Lindorf, Coppélius, Dr.Miracle & Dapertutto in a new production of The Tales Of Hoffmann and Scarpia in Tosca at the Teatro National de Sao Carlos Lisboa
2008-2010 seasons: Der Fliegende Holländer in Bergen (production: Francsca Zambello), Jochanaan in Salome at The Israeli Opera Tel-Aviv, John Claggart in Billy Budd at Teatro Abao Bilbao, from the international press highly praised role debut as Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger Von Nürnbergfor the 100.aniversary of Theater Hildesheim (production:Professor.Hans-Peter Lehmann). 2010-2011 season: Wotan in Die Walküre National Opera Vilnius, Don Pizarro in Fidelio at Opernfestspiele Heideheim, Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger at Landestheater Linz, Jochanaan in Salome at TeatroVerdi Trieste; 2010-2011 season: Wotan in Walküre in Vilnius, Trinity Moses in Rise And Fall Of The City Of Mahagonny at The Israeli Opera Tel-Aviv, Der Fliegende Holländer at Teatro Wielki Warsaw (production:Mariusz Trelinski, conductor: Rani Calderon). 2012-2013 season: Aida (Amonasro) at Royal Operahouse Muscat (Oman) with Lucrecia Garcia as Aida (production: Roberto Laganà Manoli, conductor: Patrick Fournillier), Billy Budd (John Claggart) - first performance of that opera in Russia - at Mikhailovsky Theater St. Petersburg, conductor: Mikhail Tatarnikov, production: Willy Decker, Der Fliegende Holländer at Teatro Wielki Warszawa, conductor: Andreiy Yurkevych, production: Mariusz Trelinski, new production of Der Fliegende Holländer at Mikhailovsky Theater St. Petersburg, conductor:Vasily Petrenko, production:Vera Nemirova. |
