The American baritone, Eric T. Dubin, has been singing since he was 15, when he signed up for choir because a friend told him that it was “a blow-off class.” He fell in love with opera the next day, when the teacher, hearing his voice, played him a recording of Robert Merrill. Dubin studied at and Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York (2001-2002), and the Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduating in 2007. While at Eastman, he sang W.A. Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore, K. 339 (under Ryan M. Brown , 2001), Stephen Sondheim’s Passion (under Benton Hess, 2002), J.S. Bach’s Johannes-Passion BWV 245 (under William Weinert, 2002), and Sergeant and Benoit in G. Puccini’s La Bohème (under Benton Hess, 2002. While at AVA, he sang the title roles of Rigoletto and Eugene Onegin, Marcello in La bohème, Belcore in L’Elisir d’Amore, Lescaut in Manon, David in L’Amico Fritz, Donner in Das Rheingold, Guglielmo in Le Villi, Remigio in La Navarraise and Ibn-Hakia in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta. In 2003, he sang in the Bermuda debut of Ralph Vaughan Williams' masterpiece Hodie (‘This Day') with the Bermuda Philharmonic Society. He was a finalist at the Palm Beach Vocal Competition (2002) and a regional finalist at the Metropolitan Opera's National Council Auditions (2007-2008).
Eric Dunin made his Opera Company of Philadelphia debut in 2008 in David DiChiera’s Cyrano, and returned in 2009 as Junius in Benjamin Britten’s Rape of Lucretia. Other engagements in 2009-2010 season included Schaunard in La Boheme with Nashville Opera (2009), the title role in DiChiera’s Cyrano in concert at the Orange County Arts Conservatory (2009), Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Cherry Hill Symphony (2010), Nashville Opera’s gala La Bella Notte, and his role debut as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor with Opera New Jersey.
Eric Dubin has made many significant debuts in his young career earning the baritone critical acclaim. Of a summer 2009 performance as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Opera News said, “Eric Dubin’s impressive Enrico displayed an ardent, youthful baritone that nearly turned “Cruda, funesta smania” into a sympathetic moment for his character.” The Philadelphia Inquirer agreed stating, “The role of Enrico, Lucia’s coldhearted brother, was sung by baritone Eric Dubin, whose sonorous voice and authoritative presence were well-suited to the part.” He has also sung roles as Germont in La Traviata.
In 2010, Eric Dubin debuted at Fresno Grand Opera as Marullo in Rigoletto, and Opera Cleveland as Silvio in I Pagliacci, returned to Nashville Opera as Roucher/Fléville in Andrea Chenier, and returned to Opera New Jersey as Valentin in Faust. Of this performance the Philadelphia Inquirer said “Eric Dubin (Valentin) revealed hints of vocal star quality.”
Upcoming performances include his debut as Escamillo in Carmen, with the Allentown Symphony, and a return to the Opera Company of Philadelphia as Morales/El Dancairo in Carmen.
As of 2012, Eric Dubin is a member of the Chancel Choir at Haddonfield United Methodist Church in Haddonfield, New Jersey and is married to soprano Jennifer Dubin, also a member of the choir. |
