Antonio Domenighini (Bass, Choral Conductor)

Born: January 24, 1957 - Colonia Del Sacramento, Colonia, Uruguay

The Uruguayan-Italian bass singer and choral conductor, Antonio Domenighini, recived his training as a choir director was in Buenos Aires with Antonio Russo at the Conservatorio Juan J. Castro, graduating in 1983. In the same city he studied classical guitar with Roberto Lara, and singing at the Conservatorio Municipal de Buenos Aires Manuel de Falla. He studied privately harmony and composition with teachers Guillermo Kröpfl and Luis M. Corallini. He studied orchestral conducting at the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón, and privately with teachers Simon Blech, Mariano Drago and Guillermo Scarabino, participating in the meetings for youth held by the Universidad de Cuyo in Mendoza. In 1985 he attended as an active student the course on the interpretation of vocal and instrumental music of J.S. Bach, dictated in Buenos Aires by the German teacher Helmuth Rilling, directing the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart Cantata BWV 66 Erfreut euch ihr Herzen. He participated in the course on symphonic music of the 19th century, dictated in Buenos Aires in 1986 by the French maestro Jacques Pernau, directing the Orquesta Sinfónica de Buenos Aires in Symphony No. 1 of L.v. Beethoven. He participated for two consecutive years to the orchestral conducting course dictated by the Argentine Maestro Guillermo Scarabino, conducting on both occasions the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Cuyo, in the following works: Symphony No. 104 "London" by J. Haydn and a Concerto Grosso by George Frideric Handel.

During the years of his formation Antonio Domenighini directed various choral chamber music groups, with whom he had occasion to frequent the romantic choral repertoire, Renaissance polyphony and Italian and English madrigalistic literature. In 1984 he was called to direct the choir of the S.O.D.R.E (Servicio Oficial de Radio y TV Uruguaya), with which you have the possibility to develop his practical knowledge in the field of the symphonic-choral and operatic genre. With this choir he prepared works such as Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 2 "Lobgesang", C. Orff's Carmina Burana, Giacomo Puccini's Messa di Gloria, J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), Johannes Brahms' Rhapsody for Contralto and male choir, G. Puccini's La Boheme, G. Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, G. Verdi's Aida, G. Puccini's Tosca, etc.

In 1986, Antonio Domenighini returned to Argentina, called to assume the direction of the Coro Bach de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, choir specialized in the music of J.S. Bach and the Baroque choral repertoire in general. With this choir he directed works such as the Cantata BWV 106 Actus Tragicus by J.S. Bach, Cantata BWV 12 Weinen, klagen, sorgen, sagen by the same composer, Mass in G minor, etc. In the same year he was contacted to occupy the post of deputy director of the Coro Polifónico Nacional de la República Argentina, under the direction of Antonio Russo. In this position, he prepared Alexander Nevskij by S. Prokofiev, Walpurgisnacht by F. Mendelssohn, Cantata BWV 4 Christ lag in Todesbanden by J.S. Bach, Symphony No. 9 by L.v. Beethoven, Utrecht Te Deum by G.F. Handel, etc. In 1987 he worked for one year as deputy director of the Coro de la Asociación Wagneriana de Buenos Aires, symphonic choir specialized in the German romantic repertoire. With this choir he prepared the J. Haydn;s St. Cecilia Mass, J. Brahms' German Requiem, G.F. Handel's Judas Maccabeus.

In 1988, Antonio Domenighini moved to Italy. In Italy, he perfected himself in choir conducting with Giovanni Acciai, in the courses dictated in Vicenza; attend the courses given by Padre Giulio Cattin on the music of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, and the polyphony of the 16th century in general at the University of Padova. He attended as an active student the course of specialization in Gregorian chant dictated by Padre Alberto Turco in Vicenza. He collaborated since 1990 with the I.M.L.A, (Instituto per lo studio della Musica Latinoamericana durante il periodo coloniale), which was directed by Anibal Cetrangolo. In this institute he worked as a singer and as a musical adviser in transcriptions from original music to current writing. In Padova he founded the Coro Johann S. Bach, which he would direct for 10 consecutive years. With the Coro Johann S. Bach he pewrformed frequently a large part of the Baroque repertoire for choir and orchestra, including G.F. Handel's The Messiah, J.S. Bach's Motets, F. Cavalli's Requiem, J.S. Bach's Easter Oratorio (BWV 249), Antonio Vivaldi's Magnificat and Gloria, J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243), G.F. Handel's Ode to Santa Cecilia, J.S. Bach's Cantatas BWV 4 Christ lag in Todesbanden, BWV 182 Himmels König sei willkommen, BWV 106 Actus Tragicus, BWV 78 Jesu der du meine Seele, etc. Since 1999 he is the stable director of the Coro del Santuario de S. Antonio di Padova, choir that apart from performing in the normal liturgical activity during the year, performs an intense concert activity inside the city. He directed the Coro del depto. de lengua española de la Universidad de Padova for more than two years, with which he performed on the occasion of the anniversary of the Federico G. Lorca a concert in the main hall of the University.

In addition to his activity as a choral conductor, Antonio Domenighini works as a singer of early music, with various groups such as Cantilena Antiqua de Bologna , Capella Ducale di Venetia de Venecia, Consort Veneto de Padova and Albalonga de Padova. From 1992 to 2005, he collaborated regularly with the Coro della Radio Svizzera de Lugano, under the direction of Diego Fasolis. With these groups he has recorded several albums for record labels, as Opus 111 of France, Sinphonya of Bologna, Tactus of Milano, Arts of Germany. He was the substitute for the chair of choral conducting at the Conservatorio de Messina in 1996.

Another aspect of his musical activity is the artistic direction, started in 1995. As artistic director of recording he has made records for the record companies Tactus, Bongiovanni, Velut Luna, Amadeus, Fonit Cetra, Pavane Records and others, collaborating with the most important groups of early music of northern Italy.

Musical teaching has also occupied his interest, serving as teacher of music in Argentina and in Italy. Chorality at school age has been his fundamental theme, and his long experience in the field has led him to give numerous courses, aimed at music teachers of primary and secondary schools in Uruguay, Argentina and Italy. In Padova from 1989 until today he is the artistic director and choir teacher of the Asociacion A. Ge.mus, with which he develops an intense didactic-musical and concert activity. He has collaborated from 1994 to 2000 with EsD. Bosco, with which he has developed the choral activity with children of primary school. With this school he has carried out a prolific concert activity. Since 1996 he is developing a method of teaching music for children related to choral singing and teaching music at the Escuela Randi de Padova. With this work, excellent results have been obtained, putting together teaching and fun, fundamental ingredients for learning art techniques.

From 2006 to 2010 he served for the second time as director of the choral body of the S.O.D.R.E, with which he has already worked in the preparation of the operas Tosca by G. Puccini and La Traviata by G. Verdi in the 2006 season; Rigoletto by G. Verdi and Carmen by Georges Bizet in the early 2007 and Il trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi in the 2008 season of the Solís Theater. As choir and orchestra conductor he performed in December W.A. Mozart's Vesperae solennes de confessore, and in March 2007 J.S. Bach's Easter Oratorio (BWV 249) and in June Henry Purcell's opera Dido & Aeneas with the choir and the symphonic orchestra of S.O.D.R.E. He is the founder since 2008 of the vocal-instrumental Ensemble Orfeo of Montevideo, a group with which he has presented himself on repeated occasions for chamber music cycles of the S.O.D.R.E in important hall of the Nelly Goitiño. In the same year he was hired by the Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires for the direction of his choir in a concert made in co-production with the Mozarteum Argentino.

For 2010 he has been specially invited for the re0opening of the Teatro Colón where he has the opportunity to performs the opera La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini. Also continuing with the 2010 season of this theater, he worked with the Coro Estable in the presentation of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2.

In the didactic AREA, he held the Chair of Choral Direction at the Universidad de la República, position obtained in contest of opposition and merits. He occupied this position from 2009 to 2012. He was winner of the Fondos Concursables en el Interior in 2011 with the show Cantos Navideños en siete siglos y siete lenguas as musical director. From 2011 he carries out the artistic direction of the Instituto Musical Orfeo from Colonia del Sacramento. In 2012, this Institute was selected for Fondos de Incentivo Cultural, for its Building and Cultural Development Project. He currently lives in Montevideo, Uruguay.
