The Durch organist, Pieter van Dijk, studied organ (with Bert Matter), piano and church music at the Arnhem Conservatory. He continued his studies with Gustav Leonhardt, Marie-Claire Alain and Jan Raas and was a prize-winner at international organ competitions at Deventer in 1979 and in 1986 at Innsbruck.
Pieter van Dijk is organist of the famous Van Hagerbeer/Schnitger-organ of the St. Laurenskerk in Alkmaar, where he is also an artistic director. In addition he is the City Organist of Alkmaar. Since 1997 he has been responsible for the organisation of the various organ concerts in the church (cheesemarket concerts, evening concerts and so-called 'composer nights' - whole evenings dedicated to concerts of music by a single composer). He is also artistic director of "Organfestival Holland" which organises an international organ festival every 2 years. The festival, which consists of an organ competition and week-long organ academy takes place around the historic organs of Alkmaar. He is also organist of the Old Lutheran Church in Amsterdam, and holds a permanent position as organist of the Bätz organ in the Round Lutheran Church in Amsterdam.
Pieter van Dijk is the artistic representative for the city of Alkmaar in the "European Cities of Historic Organs" (ECHO) organisation. He is also a member of the "Beirat" of the Arp Schnitger Gesellschaft in Germany as well as being active in the organ-commission of the Katharinenkirche in Hamburg.
In addition to concert engagements throughout Europe and the USA, Pieter van Dijk is professor of organ at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, and since 1995 has been professor for organ and improvisation at the Hamburg Hochschule für Musik und Theater. His publications include articles on Matthias Weckmann, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and J.S. Bach, and he has made several recordings on historic instruments in Spain and Holland. |
