The Dutch baritone, Marcel van Dieren, studied classical solo singing at the Fontys Conservatorium Tilburg with Frans Fiselier (2000-2004). After that he was coached by James McCray (pupil of Mario del Monaco) and since 2008 by the Dutch mezzo-soprano Gemma Visser. Previously he studied at the MusicAllFactory in Tilburg (Pauluslyceum Tilburg) to become proficient in the musical profession (1980-1986) and received private singing lessons from, among others, Edward Hoepelman.
Marcel van Dieren is active as a freelance baritone singer in opera, oratorio and song fields since 2004. He made his opera debut in 2005 with the role of Mister Astley in the Prokofiev's opera De speler at Opera Zuid. Afterwards he has performed many opera, operetta and musical roles and sung at Opera Zuid (since 2006), Opera Spanga (since 2008), Productiehuis Jeugdconcerten Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Joop van den Ende Theaterproducties, Opera Nijetrijne, Barokopera Amsterdam, Duitse Theater Hagen (May-July 2011) and Holland Opera in Amersfoort (since January 2018). Among his most important successes on the stage are roles like the title role in Macbeth (Verdi), Giorgio Germont in La Traviata (Verdi), Marcello in La Bohème (Puccini), Sharpless in Madama Butterfly (Puccini) , Ford in Falstaff (Verdi), Escamillo in Carmen (Georges Bizet), Tonio in I Pagliacci (Leoncavallo), Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas (Purcell), Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola (Rossini), Tsar Saltan in Tsar Saltan (Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov), Don Alfonso in Così fan Tutte (W.A. Mozart), Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus (Strauss), The Beast in Beauty and the Beast (Menken) and Scar in The Lion King (John).
Marcel van Dieren can also be admired often on the concert stage. His repertoire includes all major J.S. Bach's oratories, Requiems by Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Duruflé and Johannes Brahms, Elias (Felix Mendelssohn), Petite Messe Solennelle (Rossini), Die Sieben Wort Christi am Kreuz (César Franck) and Via Crucis Franz Liszt). He has also sung many song cycles, in very different languages. Examples include French melodies such as Don Quichotte à Dulcinée (Ravel), but also the Polish Trzy Piesni (Górecki), Songs of Travel (Ralph Vaughan Williams) and the famous Dichterliebe (Robert Schumann).
In addition to his busy performance schedule, Marcel van Dieren is also active as a singing teacher and his own Marcel van Dieren Zangstudio (since 2004). He currently lives in Tilburg, the Netherlands. |
