The German recorder player, Tabea Debus, studied at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts with Professor Michael Schneider and at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Pamela Thorby, graduating with the Principal’s Prize. She went on to be appointed Meaker Fellow for 2016-2017. During her studies she received scholarships from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes.
Described by The Times as a charismatic virtuoso, Tabea Debus is constantly exploring the horizons of music for recorder and has performed widely across Europe, in Colombia, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and the USA. Highlights include recitals at the Wigmore Hall, Early Music Festivals in London, York and Brighton, and at the Schleswig Holstein, Resonanzen, Brecon Baroque, Musica Antiqua Bolzano, Baroque at the Edge, and Edinburgh International Festivals. She has collaborated with leading musicians and ensembles such as Rachel Podger, Iestyn Davies, Richard Egarr, Laurence Cummings, Dunedin Consort (Director: John Butt), The English Concert (Director: Trevor Pinnock) in performances of George Frideric Handel's Rinaldo, LSO Soundhub, Music for Awhile, among many others. She has been represented by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) since 2018.
As a soloist Tabea Debus has appeared with La Serenissima, the English Chamber Orchestra at Cadogan Hall, Chartwell Sinfonia at St. John’s Smith Square, WDR Rundfunkchor at the Funkhaus in Cologne and with Camerata Zurich at the Tonhalle in Zürich. She has performed live on the BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and Early Music Show, and in 2019 released her fourth CD "Favourites", a follow-up to the highly acclaimed "XXIV Fantasie per il Flauto", which featuring twelve newly commissioned pieces based around Georg Philipp Telemann's Flute Fantasias.
Awards include 1st Prize in the 2014 Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and 2011 Hülsta Woodwinds International Competitions, 2nd Prize at The Arts Club - Sir Karl Jenkins Music Award, as well as St John’s Smith Square Young Artist (2015-2016), Handel House Talent (2016-2017), and City Music Foundation Artist (2016-2018) schemes. As a founding member of the ensemble tr!jo she also won top prizes at the XVIII Biagio-Marini and 2nd International Berlin Bach Competitions.
Tabea Debus teaches recorder at Wells Cathedral School, regularly leads composition and chamber music workshops at the Royal Academy of Music and Cambridge University, has collaborated with London Music Masters and Jackdaws Music Education Trust, and has been adjudicator for the British Composer Awards (BASCA) and Jugend musiziert. |
