Laura Dawalt (Soprano)

Born: USA

The American soprano and voice teacher, Laura F. Dawalt, received her Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois in May 2008 (including Arts in London, Study Abroad, Summer 2006); her Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from University of North Carolina (UNC) Greensboro in Greensboro, NC in May 2010 (Masters Concentration in Vocal Pedagogy); and her Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance (May 2013) from UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, NC in May 2013 (Doctoral Cognate in Vocal Pedagogy). She studied there under Dr. Robert Bracey. Her Awards and Honors include: Winner Cicero Music Scholarship, Churchville Chili, NYhER (2004); Winner Illinois NATS Competition (2004); Semi-Finalist Illinois NATS Competition (2006); Sylvia McNair Master class, Wheaton College, Illinois (2008); Regional Qualifier North Carolina NATS (2009); The Samuel Griffin Seawell and Patsy Moore Seawell Memorial Scholarship (2012); Emma Kirkby master class, Williams Hall, New England Conservatory (2013).

Laura Dawalt is an active soloist and recitalist and has performed solo and chamber works at New England Conservatory, Duke Chapel, Averett University, and the Boston Early Music Festival. She has performed with the Greensboro Vocal Consort and Greensboro Early Music, and is co-founder of the chamber group the Imaginary Friends Ensemble. She has sung in operas at Brevard’s Janeic Opera; the Roanoke Island Festival; and UNCG, and her alma mater Wheaton College. She has enjoyed singing the roles of Helene in Paul Hindemith's Hin und zurück, and L’écureuil in L’enfant et les sortilèges, Nimue in Camelot, Christine in a world premiere of the opera Picnic, Amy in Little Women, and Miss Titmouse in Too Many Sopranos.

Music Teaching Experience: Voice/Piano/Theory instructor at Camp Ladore, PA (August 2006 and 2007); English Coach and Music Teacher in Istanbul, Turkey (August 2011); UNCG Class Voice Student Teacher (August-December 2011); Private Voice and Piano Teacher Greensboro and Asheboro, NC (August 2010-present); Voice Faculty at Averett University, Danville, Virginia (August 2013- May 2014); Voice Faculty at Greensboro College, Greensboro NC (August 2013-present). She enjoys sharing her love of music with her students at both Greensboro College and Averett University, several of whom have won awards in classical voice and music theater competitions. Her research endeavors have included public lectures on Stephen Foster’s parlor songs, the evolution of Haitian musical culture, performance and gender in Schubert Lieder, and the French songs of Louise Talma.
