The English baritone, Robert Davies, studied at the University of Sheffield and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His awards include: Erich Vietheer Memorial Award at Glyndebourne in 2003, Wessex Award in 2005 (nominated), Royal Opera Hoyuse Jette Parker Young Artists Programme in 2007 (Shortlisted).
Robert Davies embarking on a solo career, both on the opera stage and concert platform. Hae has appeared as Mr Gedge in Albert Herring, Marcello in La Bohème, Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro and Doctor Falke in Die Fledermaus on the Festival Tour. Other notable roles at Glyndebourne include Curio in Giulio Cesare, Indian in The Bartered Bride, Guccio in Gianni Schicchi and Shepherd in Pellèas. Roles elsewhere include his debut at the Opera Comique, Paris as Ottoker in Der Freischutz; Rigoletto for Bury Court Opera; the title role in Le Nozze di Figaro, Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Kuligin in Katya Kabanova and Papageno and First Priest in in The Magic Flute for English Touring Opera; Verrina in Fiesque in the critically acclaimed British première of Lalo’s opera at the Bloomsbury Theatre (UCL), Belcore in L’Elisir D’Amore and Sharpless in Madame Butterfly for Opera Box, Greek Captain in Les Troyens in the Gramophone Award-winning production at the Châtelet Theatre, Paris, Dancaïre in Carmen and Jailer in Tosca for Diva Opera, Pish Tush in The Mikado for D’Oyly Carte, Waiter/Footman in Der Rosenkavalier at the Spoleto Festival and Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas at the Edinburgh Festival. Robert also sang in the European premieres of Ned Rorem’s Hearing and The Robbers. In 2007, Robert was shortlisted for the prestigious Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Robert Davies has sung under the baton of such distinguished conductors as Sir Simon Rattle, Vladimir Jurowski, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Emmanuelle Haïm, Sir Mark Elder, Richard Hickox, Edward Gardner and Robin Ticciati. With a wide concert repertoire, performances include the J.S. Bach's B Minor Mass (BWV 232) on a European Tour and George Frideric Handel’s Dixit Dominus in the USA; Monteverdi’s Vespers in St Mark’s, Venice; G.F. Handel’s Messiah in St. David’s Hall, Cardiff; Orff’s Carmina Burana in the Brbican, London; Johannes Brahms’ Requiem in Coventry and Westminster Cathedrals; Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah; Edward Elgar’s The Kingdom; J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) and St John Passion (BWV 245); W.A. Mozart's Mass in C Minor and Requiem; Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle; Benjamin Britten’s Cantata Misericordia; E. Elgar’s Caractacus and Haydn’s The Seasons.
As well as his opera and concert work, Robert Davies is in demand as a consort singer. He regularly performs with the Dunedin Consort (John Butt) and has been featured as consort soloist with the Gabrieli Consort (Director: Paul McCreesh) (Elijah, BBC Proms 2011). He also specialises in educational projects. He works very closely with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and has premiered several works for the Derby based orchestra, Sinfonia Viva.
Recent engagements include Haydn;s Creation in Italy, J. Brahms’ Requiem in Coventry and Westminster Cathedrals (also recorded live by Classic FM), G.F. Handel’s Messiah in Antwerp, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Perth, J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) and recitals of Finzi and Ralph Vaughan Williams in Lincoln. Recordings include Monteverdi’s Vespers with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and G.F. Handel’s Esther with the Dunedin Consort and future releases include Haydn’s Creation (ORF Alte Musik/Steinaecker) and J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) with the Dunedin Consort. |
