The American mezzo-soprano and music pedagogue, Julie Cross, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin Conservatory, her Master of Music degree in Voice from Manhattan School of Music (1999-2001), and her D.M.A. in Music-Voice Performance from the University of Michigan (2002-2005). She has studied additionally at the Centro Studi Italiani in Urbania, Italy and the Summer Language Institute (German) at the University of Michigan. Her voice teachers were Daune Mahy, Hilda Harris, Marlena Malas, George Shirley, and Shirley Verrett.
Julie Cross has performed with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Chautauqua Institution, South Beach Chamber Ensemble, Ann Arbor Art Song Festival, and other performing groups and recital venues throughout the USA. While living in New York City, she sang professionally with the St. Bartholemews Episcopal Choir.Her performance of Aunt Hannah in William Mayers opera A Death in the Family was recorded on the Albany Records label. Other opera roles include Madame Pernelle in Mechems Tartuffe, the Mother and the Witch in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, La Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica, Zita in Gianni Schicchi, Mrs. Grose in Benjamin Britten's Turn of the Screw, Baba in The Medium, Gertrude in Romeo et Juliette, and Aunt Sue in Slow Dusk.
Sjulie Cross she taught at Barry University, Florida International University, and the University of Michigan. Currently she serves as Associate Professor at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Madison, Wisconsin. She teaches Studio Voice, Diction for Singers, Vocal Literature. She was one of twelve teachers chosen nationally to be a 2007 intern with the National Association of Teachers of Singing.Dedicated to the performance and promotion of new music, she serves on the Board of Directors of the International Alliance for Women in Music. She presents recitals and master-classes in colleges throughout the country. |
