The English conductor and composer, Lawrance (Arthur) Collingwood, studied at the Guildhall School of Music in London and later at Exeter College, Oxford (1907-1911). In 1912 he went to Russia and took courses at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Glazunov, Wihtol, Steinberg, and Tcherepnin.
In 1918 Lawrance Collingwood returned to England and became active as a conductor. From 1931 to 1941 he was principal conductor and from 1941 to 1947 music director at Sadler's Wells in London.
In 1948 Lawrance Collingwood was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire. His compositions include 2 operas: Macbeth (London, April 1934) and The Death of Tintagiles (concert performance, London, April 1950), Piano Concerto, Piano Quartet and 2 piano sonatas. |
