The Korean mezzo-soprano, Soo-Yun Chung (AKA: Soo-Yeon Jeong; Korean: 정수연), was a member of the National Choir after she graduated from the Department of Vocal Music at the Hanyang University College of Music. After that, she graduated from the American Peabody Conservatory Graduate School, graduated from the Peabody Conservatory Professional Performer Program (Graduate Performance Diploma), and graduated from the Academy of Vocal Arts Doctoral Program in Philadelphia with excellent grades (Artist Diploma). She studied with Mariana Bushing, Tedpuffer, Pat Misslin, Kang Sung-sil, and Jeong Dong-hee. She was East Division Finalist at Metropolitan Opera Competition, Middle East Division Finalist, Liederkranz Foundation Voice Competition Winner, Giargiari Bel Canto Competition 2nd Will Winner, James Parkinson Italian Opera Voice Competition Winner, Oratorio Society of New York Competition, Mario Lanza Competition (2002), Concours musical international de Montréal by winning the Jeunesses Musicales final, her skills as a professional performer were fully recognized on the international stage.
On the opera stage Soo-Yun Chung has performed various roles such as Suzuki in Puccini's Madama Butterfly, Orsini in Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia, Teresa in Bellini's La Sonnambula, Dido in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, Mother in Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilges, Orlofsky in Strauss' Die Fledermaus, Dame Quickly in Verdi's Falstaff. She has also sung oratorios such as George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, W.A. Mozart's C minor Messe, W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Rossini's Stabat mater, J.S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248), Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria, etc. Her singing provides various musical expressions, techniques, and rich tones, and gives a glimpse her overflowing enthusiasm for learning and improving.
In addition, she is actively performing with the Mexican Symphony Orchestra and the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico, the performance of Madama Butterfly with the San Antonio Opera Company, the performance of Madama Butterfly with the Boheme Opera Company, and performances at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York. Currently, she is actively performing in New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, USA, Mexico, Canada, etc. With her mezzo-soprano attractive tone and charisma, she captures the hearts of the audience.
Soo-Yun Chung served as Adjunct Professor at Hanyang University in Seoul and Professor of vocal music at Sungshin Women's University in Seoul. Currently she is Music Director of the Seil Cultural Foundation
